Dream Denied

Doesn’t this picture just say it all? Michael Strahan celebrating while my Tommy tries to pull himself up off the turf. Another sack, another blown play … another heartbreaker.

I know I’m asking to get flamed for this — but I forgot how bad it feels to lose. When I was growing up, the Red Sox were dogs, compared to the Yankees, and the Patriots couldn’t sell out their games. They were embarrassing, but I was still a fan.

Then, over the last 5 or 6 years, my teams started getting good! Then, not just good, but great! And I became a little cocky.

So, going into the Superbowl, I honestly didn’t even entertain the idea that we might lose. I knew the Giants would be a worthy foe — after all, they nearly beat us in Week 17 — but I figured that my boys would come to play, for the biggest game of the year.

You’ve all seen the highlights (and the lowlights) so I won’t bother with a blow-by-blow breakdown of the game. They played well; we didn’t. They won; we didn’t. They will go down in history as heroes; we will go down as losers. 18-1 isn’t good enough.

Time to regroup for next year.

(Editor’s Note: How ironic is it that a former Syracuse University player drove the final nail in the Patriots coffin? Double whammy.)
