It’s been a few days since I last posted — because I’ve been lost in baby world! For those who haven’t ventured onto that hallowed ground before, let me tell you … it’s easy to get sucked in!
I don’t have any babies of my own and while I truly can’t wait, I know that my husband and I are not quite ready for such a major life change. I actually think I’m lucky that I have the parents I do — they didn’t have me until they were 29 years old, and had been married for a few years. It kind of takes the pressure off of me … I had a great childhood, and I think (hope!) that my parents got some of their dreams taken care of before the responsibility of toting around toddlers. Seeing them lets me know that waiting, and getting more prepared, is okay.
Anyway, back to baby world. A little more than a week ago, a college roommate had her first baby, a boy named Brett. She and the baby are beautiful — and it’s still sinking in that someone I played beer pong with and coordinated comforters with for four years has a child of her own. Gosh, that makes me feel old!
Then, on Sunday, I got the call I had been waiting for — my co-worker was in the hospital, giving birth to *her first baby, a little girl named Elizabeth.
That’s me holding her. Isn’t she amazing? She has a head full of thick hair, and — she’s quite a budding fashionista — already she’s showing blond highlights in the dark fuzz.
She’s almost 10 pounds, but she doesn’t look it. I held her for more than an hour, past the point where my arms fell asleep, and well past the point that her parents probably wanted me in the room. I just couldn’t get enough of that sweet little girl. And her parents are amazing. Considering that neither of them has done this before, they certainly look like pros!
I feel very lucky to have those two babies in my life, along with other children that I can go to when I need hugs, kisses and playtime.
Of course, if they aren’t around, I have two dogs and two cats that act like children, and give me attention anytime I need it.
