Food Finds, Exercise Sampler and Dancing With Sparkly Canes

Yup, it’s been a busy couple of days! When we last left off, I was still freaking out about the toilet frog. Well, it turns out it’s a pretty regular thing here in Florida! I was telling my story to some people over dinner last night, and TWO of them said “oh yeah, that’s happened to me.”

So, I just did a google image search for “frog in toilet” and here are just SOME of the examples I found:

So, needless to say, I’ll continue to check the toilet bowl before taking a seat.

I went to the COOLEST wedding last night … a friend and former co-worker was tying the knot with her adorable fiance, in a unique ceremony. They’re both Egyptian, so the wedding was actually just a reception, because the ceremony took place earlier, and most of the guests were Arabic. It was a standard wedding in many ways — she wore a stunning white dress, we had a plated dinner, there was a DJ, a cake, etc. But in between the Justin Timberlake and Beyonce songs were these amazing, colorful songs and dances. We all got to jump in and shake our hips, and there was even this dance involving canes and fez hats. I tried to google it and found this, but I’ll have to ask my friend if this is what they were doing.

And the night was kicked off in grand style when she and her husband took the dance floor for their first dance, and about halfway through the song, the DJ scratched the record and said “oh no, I’m sorry. That was a mistake.” The next thing we know, my friend and her husband are busting out a completely choreographed hip hop dance routine! It was so cool. I wish I had had my camera, but I’m sure she’ll share pictures later. Good food, good dancing, lots of fun.

And on the way out, we wandered our way through a crowd of kids … cheering for a purpose, people.

This morning, Lucas and I had a lot of work to do on the bathroom, plus we needed to drop off some stuff to Goodwill and run other errands. So I got the day started with a bowl of blueberry stovetop steel cut oats:

and a big cup of coffee. A few hours later, for lunch, I scarfed down an entire bag of frozen veggies, a cup of grapes and some chicken noodle soup.

I didn’t have enough daylight to take the bike ride I had planned on, so I decided to explore ExerciseTV on my digital cable … and I am so glad I did! I had a blast … there are so many programs, including Jillian Michaels’ 30 Day Shred (one of my faves), Carmen Electra Hip Hop (meh), Flirty Fitness (an AWESOME program that is part striptease, part core training) and many, many yoga classes.

But I think my favorite program that will be part of my at-home exercise routine is by Marian Shannon. She was apparently discovered by Oprah Winfrey (I mean, who isn’t).

Marian also has her own fitness Web site, on which she says “fitness is my passion!” Her back story is that she was a single mom of three, and to make ends meet, she worked as an exotic dancer. Now she’s a personal trainer.

The workout is called ABSolutely Amazing Abs, and you can actually download it for free from Exercise TV’s Web site. In Central Florida, you can watch it for free on demand, on Digital Cable channel 306, along with all of the other programs I mentioned and more. It’s a tough abs session, but only lasts about 11 minutes. Let me know if you try it out!

In FOOD FINDS news, I am still on the search for Barney Butter (Kath and other food bloggers swear by it) but no luck so far. I’m too cheap to pay to have it shipped. But I did find (finally) the Clif Mojo PB&J Dipped bars at Whole Foods, along with some other fun flavors that I don’t usually see in my travels. Lucas and I stocked up … and picked up some other fun stuff — dandelion greens, a bunch of yuca-like root veggies that I have to figure out how to cook, some tempeh and some tofu.

So, tonight, I decided to finally make the Gliding Calm tofu that has been on my “to try” recipe list for so long. And boy.am.I.glad.I.did.

(I know, I know … the pictures stink. I can’t figure out how best to set the flash and/or fix the pics in Photoshop. I’m working on it.)

Instead of selecting some of the ingredients that Miss Gliding Calm suggests, I went with all of them. And it was so good. The rub made the edges of the tofu crispy and crunch, while the insides stayed soft. I mixed it with chard a la Alanna and some basic brown rice.

Yum, yum, yum … highly recommended. And with all of that, I am finally free to watch SATURDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL!

I think Barney Butter is only sold in stores on the west coast, but I’m not sure. I’ve never seen it in R.I. or N.J.

Haha, I didn’t know that people in real life actually did those dance things… you usually just see this stuff on youtube.
I must try this tofu recipe… everyone keeps raving about it!
The ABSolutely amazing workout I took was less than 10 minutes and I wasn’t that impressed. I wonder if she got better – the woman just seemed nervous on tape the entire time. I’ll check our her website… thanks for stopping by my blog and letting me know! :)
