“Mama, I’m coming ho-o-ome…”
I am now just hours away from seeing my beloved Beantown for the first time in a while! I’m heading to the Healthy Living Summit, a great get-together for foodies, bloggers, fitness freaks and more. Since I’m all three, you KNOW I had to attend! I’ll be tweeting through the summit, so if you follow me: http://twitter.com/kwidrick and keep an eye on the #HLS hashtag, it will be like you’re there.
I’ll also be updating my blog in between all the fun and food.
Speaking of fun (kind of) I snuck in a 6 mile run this morning. I figured I needed a good sweatfest before all the goodies I’ll be eating this weekend, and it was good to start a long travel day with a calming, self-indulgent run. And the morning has been even better so far because the husband and I had time for coffee and this:
Steel Cut Oats
Close-up of deliciousness
This is usually our weekend routine — wake up, exercise, drink coffee and eat special steel cut oats. Since I won’t be here, Lucas asked to move the schedule up. Cute.
Last night, a couple of things caught my eye. First, these melons at Publix. The sign said they were $3.99 a pound, and when I weighed one of them, it was 7 pounds! (That’s so close to a “That’s What She Said” moment)
$3.99 a POUND?
I asked the produce kid (he was about 17 years old) if that could possibly be right, and he just shrugged. Sigh.
Luckily, Publix redeemed itself with sushi samples:
Nom nom nom
I noshed on a brown rice version while stocking up on some goodies for next week. Can’t trust the husband to shop on his own, now!
And, if you need some distraction reading on this Friday, here is a roundup of stories that are currently catching my eye:
- Why Exercise Won’t Make You Thin
- This one intrigues me, because it makes the case that too many of us exercise and then “reward” our hard work with calorie-rich foods. It’s the “I ran 2 miles so I can have a plate of french fries.” I’d love to hear your thoughts after reading this.
- Women Cry for 16 Months of Their Lives
- It might be more, in my case! I’m an emotional person … I cry when I’m happy, when I’m sad, and definitely when I’m stressed! Remember the scenes in “Broadcast News” where Holly Hunter would get to work early and cry, so she got it out of her system? I’ve always related to that.
- This is Your Brain on Retouching
- Fascinating, fascinating, fascinating. This stems from the debate over retouching on Kelly Clarkson’s “SELF” magazine cover. I hope you read it, because it sheds a lot of light on the business of beauty and what real women look like.
And this one gets its own line — the Fab Fatties challenge. Check the blog for details, but it’s an amazing idea, to inspire, motivate and encourage ourselves and each other to improve our health and well-being. As simple as drinking water and as intense as setting and meeting a personal goal, there’s something for everyone. And people, there are prizes involved!
That’s all for now — remember to follow me on Twitter, and look for Boston updates here on the blog!

*Geesh* thanks for the mention
Great post. So I am, going crazy wondering if you were to have bought a melon would it have been $28? That is insane! Maybe you should go back and at least take it to the register just for kicks and giggles. Thank goodness for gardens.
I want to hang out with you for a day it looks like you have fun.
The article about exercise. I kind of agree if you just eat up all the calories just because you have burned them. I will admit I have counted and matched each calorie down to the last hersheys kiss before, lol.
Crying is good for you, I think. It helps release your emotion so you don’t just fill up with water and explode!
XO Make it a great day!
