Beer Making's a Stinky Business

Last night, Lucas let me know that despite a massive failure at home beer brewing this spring, he wanted to try, try again. This meant two things for me:

  1. The house was going to smell like malted grains for at least 12 hours. Brewed beer? A wonderful scent. Getting there? Pretty nasty.

  2. I was not going to have access to the oven or stove for dinner preparation.

(Sorry for the blurry photos — I’d just gotten some close-up shots of the brewing grains and I guess the lens fogged up!)

Rather than get takeout, I decided to look through the fridge and throw whatever I could find on the outdoor grill. Tortillas? Check. Cheese? Yup. Peppers and onions? Quesadilla? It’s on.

With some grilled broccoli, made with garlic, olive oil and garlic. Ohhhh, yeah.

It nearly made up for the horrible odor that took over my kitchen. Shudder.

Last night’s dinner was pretty good, too — I took this cornbread recipe and tweaked it. I used whole wheat flour, Stonyfield vanilla yogurt instead of plain, and didn’t add any sugar.

Lucas is a cornbread freak, but I hate pouring in the white flour, sugar, eggs and butter that a normal recipe calls for. This came out pretty dense, and could have used a bit of flavor — maybe some more salt? — but was a nice side dish to the brussels sprouts and grilled chicken. Plus, there were plenty of leftovers for today’s lunch!

I’m posting later than planned tonight, and had to bail on my yoga plans, but it’s for a super-awesome but super-secret reason. Once we get the OK to talk about it, Lucas and I will post details on our blogs. Cross your fingers, though … it could involve a really fun trip to one of our favorite places:

I watched some of the President’s speech and will be really interested to see how it is spun tonight and tomorrow on the news. In the excitement of beer brewing and quesadilla cooking, I forgot to tape Glee tonight, so I’m psyched that it will be available on Hulu tomorrow. That, plus Project Runway (and Models), Top Chef and America’s Next Top Model should keep me pretty busy.

What shows are you watching this fall?
