I had a wonderful time on vacation, but as stated before, I ate:

and drank:

and ate:

and drank some more.
In fact, the last day of vacation is a blur of beer and bubble tea, courtesy of Portland (and my mom).
After a week of complete and total indulgence (who doesn’t need an ice cream a day?), Lucas and I both agreed that it was time to cleanse the ol’ systems and get back to some good healthy eating.
Speaking of Lucas, he found out today that he did not win the Beer Brewing internship in Portland, so he’s been a little bummed. He sure could use a nice comment or two on his site!
Normally on a Sunday, we enjoy a few beers and junk food while watching football, but instead, Sunday was a sequence of oatmeal, tofu shirataki noodles, veggie burgers and some delicious raw veggies. My tummy is thanking me already.
The veggie burgers had a wonderful and delicious home in some Nature’s Pride bread, sent to me (***disclosure alert!***) because I am a Foodbuzz Publisher. (Note — I’ll be updating my Disclosure rules on the blog, in light of the FTC’s ruling that all gifts, etc. must be announced). The bread has nothing funky in it, tastes delicious, and is really big for 110 calories a slice! Lucas also loved it (he’s been nibbling over the last few days).

While hanging out with the family in Maine, I read triathlete Brendan Brazier’s best-selling book “Thrive.” Guess I need another disclosure here, because it was given out free to people who paid their way into the Healthy Living Summit a few months ago.
Brazier believes in eating whole foods, a plant-based diet (which is mostly vegan and often raw) as part of his training regime. He gives all sorts of great reasons for eating clean in the book.
I enjoyed it, in a research-y kind of way. I’m not prepared to turn my life over completely to flax seed, maca, yerba mate and chlorophyll, but the things he calls for are pretty close to what I’m already doing.
And as part of my detox, I chugged a Wild Berry Burst Greens + and really enjoyed it!

That, plus a big green salad, some prunes and lots of water have me feeling like myself again.

I can’t believe I’m running a half-marathon in only two months…gulp! More on my preparations for the big day in an upcoming post. Stay tuned!
And tell me: What do you do when you feel like you need a “detox?”

Hey Katy! Enjoyed your post, as always, but I was wondering if you had any links or info on detoxes. I’m always looking for one to do when I’m feeling gross and was hoping you could put me in the right direction! (I’m full of questions…) Also, where did you get the juice (Wild Berry Burst Greens)? I’d like to do something like this for myself since Jeff is pretty much anti-veges!
I think the most important thing is to not go ‘no naughty food’ or ‘i feel so terrible’. I think you say…wow that was fun…now I am going to love myself some exercise and fresh food.
I love a nice juice though–celery, carrot, ginger, beetroot. Yesterday I had some with garlic in it. It was awesome!
Just do what you know. Sorry about Lucas not winning..portland, or is a fantastic place. tell him to keep trying!

I love Whoopie Pies. Very jealous!
I understand the post vacation tummy aches – although it is wonderful to indulge for a few days, I always feel better when I get back to more “normal” food.
I miss fall in New England! I do the same thing when coming back from vacation by getting back on track with with healthy eats. Thanks for the run-down on the book, I’ve been meaning to check it out myself.
My detox usually consists of a lot of liquids, like tea and fruit juice, plenty of fruit and veggies, and I quit eating meat and fried things. If I really crave them, I just boil them, but I try to stay away. Napping and exercise helps a lot too.
