Nasoya and Pom: My Two BFF

by Katy on October 8, 2009

I have a new love…and its name…is Dark Chocolate Silken Nasoya Tofu.

So, last night, after a delicious dinner, my sweet tooth was bugging me. I’ve had a block of the aforementioned tofu in the fridge for weeks (purchased with a coupon I picked up at the Healthy Living Summit) but haven’t had the nerve to open.

Remember, I’m a tofu convert. Now, it’s one of my favorite meals, but as recently as a year ago, I thought — why would anyone choose to eat fermented soy? Fermented anything??

But with just a few days left on the expiration date, I bravely acquired my prey:

Silken Tofu 3

Peeled back the label:

Silken Tofu 4

And dug in.

Silken Tofu 6

And just like that, a girl fell in love with fermented chocolate soy.

Don’t judge me, Travers.

Seriously, y’all, this was amazing. I was only going to taste it to see how it would work in a smoothie, and it turned out, it’s like the most delicious dark chocolate pudding you can imagine. It’s silky, rich and tastes VERY decadent.

It does go against my portion-control instincts, since there are five servings of 120 calories each, but I was smart and put my serving in a bowl and put the rest away before trying it. Because that box could have been destroyed.

I have a strawberry tofu in the fridge still, so I’m pretty excited to dig into that one soon!

So, one of the things that I have learned in my healthy living journey is that if you’re going to eat healthy, you have to make it exciting. When I bring too many boring things for lunch — plain veggies, soup, salad, etc. — I end up feeling unfulfilled, which my mind is quick to tell me is hungry. Even though it’s not. So, my daily goal is to have at least one thing at every meal that excites me.

Having said that, here was today’s lineup. On the way to work:

Drinking Water 2

Breakfast (keep reading for a review of this PomX Iced Coffee that I received as a sample from the company):

Pom Iced Coffee 1

Lunch:

Apple 1

La Croix 1

Oatmeal 1

Office Okra 2

And snack (Greens+ Wheatgrass):

Any guesses on what had me so excited? Well, it was a two-parter. Oatmeal FOR LUNCH! And okra fries a la Meghann that I brought to work raw but put in tin foil and stuck in the toaster oven.

There’s just something about having oatmeal outside of breakfast that feels special. My officemates were very jealous when they smelled my good stuff cooking today.

So, you saw the PomX Iced Coffee? DISCLOSURE ALERT: these samples were sent to me, along with a case of regular Pom juice, by the nice people at Pom Wonderful.

REVIEW

There is a lot to like about both Pom the company, and Pom the people. They are truly committed to healthy living, whole foods, helping people and respecting the earth. I met one of the Pom representatives at the Healthy Living Summit and was blown away at how real, generous and FUN she was!

I have several samples to try, so today, Lucas and I decided to take on the Cafe au Lait.

The Good:
  • This tasted like exactly what it was — milk, coffee and sugar. It was creamy, very easy to drink and had a really nice aftertaste. With regular brewed coffee, I often find myself tasting the drink hours later. Not with this one.
  • The adorable bottle and the superior ingredient list.
  • The decent nutritional content — 7 grams of protein? Wowza!

The Not-As-Good:

  • For me, if I’m going to “spend” 170 calories on a coffee drink, I’d rather go with a hot coffee — latte, cappuccino, etc. — that I can sip and enjoy. This was gone in about 5 minutes and it didn’t fill me up at all.
  • Lucas called after taking his first sip and said “This isn’t so much coffee as it is au lait.” I agree. This tasted like milk with coffee flavor, rather than the other way around. Before you leave me nasty comments — yes, I know that Cafe au Lait is by nature milk-y. I’m hoping that the other samples I have (chocolate and vanilla) are more coffee-flavored. We’ll see.

Would I buy this? Meh. Again, it goes back to the relatively high calorie count. And as a coffee freak, I prefer my coffee hot and strong. But this morning, I thought of this as a protein shake, following my 8-mile run. So in that way, yes, I would buy it.

Still with me? Leave me a comment: What “treats” do you make for lunch and dinner so you don’t get bored?

Okay now I will have to find this flavored soy and try it. I have tried the Pom coffee drink but it was not my thing.

I keep reading your blog hoping your healthiness will rub off on me.

Katy, if you are going over the top into tofu, just don’t go making any tofu cheesecakes at a family reunion and trying to get us to eat them all. did that in the 70′s and once was more than enough. In fact, one bite was more than enough…but making something out of Pom juice, I am with you on that. Hey, I thought of you today when I was out in the woods for my 3rd exercise hour of the week. go you for inspiring me! luv ya–p

OMG chocolate tofu. I would die and then go to heaven. When I go back to America I am going to stock up on so many things which you bloggies write about. It’s gonna be amazing..like a kid in a candy shop. Which brings me to your question…what can I eat. Well, I can’t eat any sugar. I have found these sugar free carob frogs–they’re fun to eat cause they’re frog shapped. Anyways, I get seven of those a week at a store and have them after meals. It is hard for me to have a ‘dessert’ because most desserts have sugar in them. I do love me a carrot w/ peanut butter though.

Ok..did I mention that I love how you look possessed with the tofu..and the nails..nice work.
