Exposed: My Journey to Self-Acceptance

I have had this post written in my head for months — ever since I saw the Exposed post that Michelle started (see all the amazing posts here).

In it, she vowed to love her body regardless of size, and started an Internet sensation.

However, I held off…for the following, shameful reasons:

  • I’m about 10 pounds from my “happy” weight.
  • My half-marathon and triathlon training have taken me away from strength training, and my muscles aren’t as defined as they once were.
  • It’s scary to put yourself out there for the world to judge!

And then, while on a special trip with my husband, in which I found myself completely at peace and happiness, it hit me:

THIS IS EXACTLY WHEN I SHOULD BE EXPOSING MYSELF.

I am so proud of myself — where I have been (40 pounds heavier), where I have gone (triathlete, official runner and healthy living guru) and where I am going (turning 30 in a few months).

I am happy 10 pounds lighter, of course, but my current weight allows me to run 10 miles without blinking; be a serious contender in my age group for triathlons; eat what I want, when I want, with no guilt; make friends from across the blogging world; be a happy and healthy wife, daughter, cousin, co-worker, friend.

So, I present to you my version of Exposed. No, I’m not stripped down to my skivvies — maybe that will be round 2. For now, enjoy.

    Katy,
This is great!! So awesome of you to join in on the “exposed” movement. The more people doing this – I just think more and more people will see that we are much more than skin deep. And that wherever we each are on our journey, that's okay.

    And…you are a triathlete!!! I love it!!

  4. TryingToHeal says:

I love this and wish I had as much strength as you have to do it myself on my blog.

You are amazing. And I'm so happy to read that you know it, especially about what your body does for you.

You look great! BTW, strength training will really help you out. I am also a runner myself (30-40 miles on avg a week) and I try to strength train at least 2-3 times a week for about 20 mins or so.

This is such a beautiful post. It takes a lot of strength to do a post like this and you really do have an amazing body. I think it's so beautiful to see women who recognize the strength and beauty of our bodies, instead of just focusing on what we want to change about them.

  13. tiffanieh says:

Hi Katy! Love your post!!! There are probably MORE people than not that feel so much of the same thing you are feeling. It's a never ending cycle in my mind, and thoughts that I have to constantly squish down in order to stay on top of them. We ARE more than our waistline! :)

I wanted to invite you to join my running partner and I to workout with us in the mornings if you are interested?? We workout at 24 hr. fitness before the world wakes up and get in our run AND strength training each day. We do one body part a day in order to get everything accomplished and not have to sacrifice the running OR the strength training!

Also…do you have a running group for your Saturday runs? So far it's just her and I and we'd love to meet up with other women who are training for the Princess!!

    let me know…

I just jumped over here from the http://www.nomorebacon.com blog. I think the exposed movement is great. We should be taking care of our bodies and be thankful for what they do. Hope to read more from your blog over the coming weeks and months.
