I’ve been a nail biter my entire life…I learned it from my mom, although to be fair, she did everything she could to end this disgusting family legacy. She spent a small fortune trying to get me manicures, buying that gross No-Bite stuff, etc., but none of it worked.
I’ve gotten acrylics a million times, taken them off to reveal long nails underneath, only to then bite them down to a bloody pulp.
So you’ll forgive me for celebrating a small milestone — 3 weeks — of no biting!
I have mom to thank for this, too. She bought me a Groupon coupon for a mani-pedi and I was so ashamed…I thought — I can’t waste this awesome gift! So I pledged to do everything I could to let the nails grow, and so far, so good. I’m still nibbling at my cuticles (obvi) but I believe in celebrating baby steps.
Other housekeeping:
- How awesome is our girl Caitlin for her absolutely FLAWLESS performance on the “Today” show, spreading the Operation Beautiful message? I got chills watching this morning. I’m lucky enough to have gotten to know Caitlin well during her time here in Central Florida, and let me tell you — she is every bit as sweet and inspiring as she comes off.
- Speaking of TV — did I mention that the show I produce (Growing Bolder) is being distributed nationally to PBS stations this fall? Here’s the scoop. I will be appearing (meeps!) in all the episodes, doing Tech Minutes.
- While I’m tooting my own horn, I was pretty excited to interview the man who co-founded the “Chicken Soup for the Soul” franchise. I’m embedding the video below. Be kind.
And finally — if you haven’t checked out my new site design, let me know what you think! I still have some work to do, but I’m pretty happy with the new header.
What’s your worst habit? What habits drive you crazy in others? (me: whistling, knuckle cracking and bad grammar)

Knuckle cracker and hair twirler here…
Admitting it is the first step
Congrats on the nails. They nails look fantastic. As a biter (inherited from mum) I know how hard it is to give up!
Thanks, Suzanne! The first few days were the hardest, but now that I have some beautiful nails to look at, it’s getting easier.
Your nails look fabulous!
I can’t see the video but I used to love those chicken soup books, such powerful stories.
Mom says YOU GO GIRL!!!! I quit, I know you can, too. LOVE YOU!
I bite my nails!!! I have tried so many times to stop…one day.
The hardest part for me is that sometimes I don’t realize I’m doing it — I look down and BOOM…where are my nails? Let me know if you need a “no nailbiting” cheerleader.
I used to be obsessed with biting my nails! Not sure when the change happened but one day I realized I was at a point where I could let my nails grow longer before the next “session” of biting. I have found the best trick for me is not to let them get too long. If I let them get too long (to where I can hear them clicking on the keyboard when I type) I will go berserk and bite them off in 2 seconds flat. And NO nail polish, not even clear. One little chip and I start picking at it and my fingers end up in my mouth biting off the nails again. So now I keep them plain, filed and not too long. A bit of progress every day! (Sheesh – Sorry for the long comment. But what a relief to get that all off of my chest!)
p.s. Love the new design! Very clean.
The polish chips are the worst for me, too…I’ll start picking at a tiny piece and once one nail is gone, I figure…it already looks awful, so why not bite them all?
Crossing my fingers that this time, I stay strong…
I am not a nail biter- but I am obsessed with getting my nails done! It’s so darn expensive!!!
Will you be at HLS? No worries I don’t need a shower since I will be stay at the hotel
Sana,
I won’t be at HLS this year — work calls! It was a blast last year, but especially since I did Fitbloggin’ this year, I just couldn’t swing it.
I’ll be counting on you and the others to tweet and post so I can follow along!
YEP! Nail biter. Remember Tobasco sauce on the fingers at night! Oh I do.. But seriously, I have not been biting my nails this year… What changed? Believe it or not, I started taking Vitamin D daily AND getting manicures about once every couple of months…All those years……..Hmm
Oh, I’ve done Tobasco…that and the No Nail Biting gel, which didn’t stop me. I just ate right through the pain and nastiness!
The Vitamin D is interesting — I’ll have to give it a shot!
Nail biters use to not bother me, but a few years ago my bf tried to enlist me to help him stop. Well he hasn’t stopped and now my biggest pet peeve is seeing someone biting their nails. It. drives. me. crazy. So used to yelling at him to stop, I snapped at a co-worker the other day.
On the plus side, I have stopped biting my nails!
Kate —
It drives my husband BONKERS — especially the sound. I feel so bad for not quitting before this, since my bad habit is his pet peeve. He snaps at me, sometimes, too!
Knuckle cracking for sure… too bad there’s not something to keep me away from that like a manicure
