First — are you catching up from the long holiday weekend? I know I’m not the only one who took advantage of that “mark all as read” button on Google Reader. So here’s what you missed:
I had an AMAZING weekend — lots of gardening, working out (a 2K swim! Dance Trance!) and very little time in front of the computer. I even carved out some special “me” time at the movies…and my stomach still hurts from laughing.

“Bridesmaids” is the bomb, y’all. And, without spoiling the movie, here are 10 things the movie taught me.
1. Jason Bateman and the dad from “Friday Night Lights” are in every movie that’s coming out in the next 12 months. Technically I learned that during the movie trailers, not the movie itself, but I figured you guys wouldn’t mind.
2. Las Vegas bachelorette parties are DANGEROUSLY good ideas that may land you in custody. I know this not only because of the movie but because I, too, went to Vegas — and I, too, nearly got arrested. Exhibit A:

That’s one of the more tame photos from the bunch. And yes, those were real cops. Remember, what happens in Vegas — including the way there — stays between girls.
Side note: my bridesmaids also came to Orlando to help me dress shop. Looking back, I think that visit was a prelude to Vegas because I just found THIS picture in my files:

3. Every girl born between 1970 and 1982 knows all the words to “Hold On” by Wilson Phillips. And we all do the same dance to it. Also, anyone born between 1995 and 2000 thinks that Wilson Phillips is a 12-year-old kid that sings the opening act for Justin Bieber. The adorable young things next to me at the theater snickered at me when they heard me humming along.
4. Women are freaking funny. I’ll admit, I’ve been on the fence about Kristin Wiig — some of her SNL skits are funny and others just make me rue the day that Amy Poehler left the show. But she, Maya Rudolph and the other brilliantly cast actors are rockstars.
5. It’s hard work being a maid of honor! The planning…the expenses…the trying not to go nuts. My maid of honor Abby is one of my best friends from college, and one of the most fun people I know. She was AMAZING because she let me be totally crazy about planning and then talking me off the many ledges that I found myself on.
And on my wedding day, she didn’t freak out even though two terrible things happened to her:

a) my hairdresser actually CUT her hair into a horrible bang thing because he didn’t correctly get it into her up-do. And she.just.smiled.

b) on my wedding day morning, I thought it would be a great idea to pose next to a motorcycle. We didn’t realize it had recently been running and she burned her leg so badly on the engine that she is STILL scarred. And she.just.smiled.
6. Sometimes you don’t know things are tacky, artificial, ostentatious or just freaking bizarre until it’s too late. And during those times, you need a friend who will smack you around or crawl into bed with you and snuggle until you agree that giving away framed pictures of yourself is not a great idea for a wedding favor.
7. I will never be able to not laugh when women do disgusting things. I won’t give it away. But you might need to be ready to hold your hands over your eyes scary movie style during the dress shopping scene.
8. Purple is an awesome color for bridesmaid dresses. Even through the third degree burns, don’t my bridesmaids look adorable? (See above photo)
9. Girls can be real self-saboteurs. Or would it be self-sabotrices? Either way, we sure do know how to get in our own way when it comes to friends, family, relationships…
9b. Boys can be real jag-wagons*. Even when they look like Jon Hamm. They can still be total tools.
10. Weddings, no matter how beautiful and ceremonial, are all about one thing. The dress. Not wanting to kill all of your guests by the time the night is over. Or, I guess you can want to. But not actually killing all of your guests by the tie the night is over. That’s what weddings are about.

3). Include 1983 in that window, I know the group & the song!
never been to Vegas. I loved the movie, I agree it was hilarious and Jon Hamm’s character was also hilarious (but he is def. A jagwagon). I don’t think my moh had to do much to keep me in check, our wedding wasn’t too over the top. But she did do a LOT of planning/work for my shower and bachelorette festivities! That’s crazy that your moh’s hair was CUT during the updo and that she got burned! Yikes.
Your account of your own wedding sounds about as hilarious as the movie! I haven’t seen it yet, but I do know all the words to “Hold On.” Who doesn’t?
I LOVED Bridesmaids. Such a good movie — and yes the shopping scene was hysterical. I think this movie proves that women can do (and laugh at) gross-out scenes just as well as men!
I am still singing Hold On – and my friend and I both sang it in the theater! (I honestly thought it was going to turn into a group sing-a-long)
Yikes on the cops in Vegas (and in Orlando – ha ha). So it’s kinda a theme for you, huh?
PS – Love, love, love 30 Rock. As someone who works in television production, do you relate?
I’m pretty sure you meant Jason Bateman, not Justin Batemen, right? Cause if so, you’re right that he does seem to be in freakin’ everything coming out this summer. And I couldn’t be happier about it.
I loveloveLOVED Bridesmaids. Absolutely hilarious. And how cute were all of Kristin Wigg’s minidress + blazer outfit combos?
HA! Oops. Fixing it now.
I just saw bridesmaids last week and I looooooooved it!! I think the name is a little tacky/makes men not want to go see it, but the movie was hysterical and something I would highly recommend to anyone! So so good!
I still have not seen Bridemaids – I am dying to since I am a huge Kristen Wiig fan, but I can totally relate to knowing the lyrics of Hold On!
I’m not allowing myself to see the movie until after I get married (in a month)! I’ve never been a bridesmaid myself so I don’t want to know the terrible things I’m putting my friends through until after it all happens
You should include 1986 in number 3! I knew all the words to that song and my boyfriend just laughed at me when I started singing it during the movie!
“Don’tcha know, things’ll change, things’ll go your way, if you hooooooold on, for one more day, just hooooooooooold on for one more day!”
@1979 here…doing my birth year proud (and co-workers cower and hide their faces in shame at my off-pitch singing)
#1: Jason Bateman is EVERYWHERE. Still need to see Bridesmaids – but I saw Fast Five this weekend (Vin Diesel and Dwayne Johnson in the same movie – *swoon*) and Jason Bateman was in at least one of the trailers.
and
#6: one of my bridesmaids was 7 months pregnant and we had the dress altered to fit her. It was horrible. I should have gone with a different style but same color scheme for everyone.
While I laughed until I cried, I thought the movie was a little over-the-top and unbelievable. Although, I do have a friend who has used a sink as a toilet before. I saw it by myself because I had a Fandango ticket to use while in Orlando on a solo trip. Maybe I needed to see it with girlfriends to appreciate the humor. LOL
I have GOT to see this movie!! I’m hearing so many good things about it. We saw the Hangover 2 this weekend. It was alright, not as great as the first one.
I haven’t seen bridesmaids but wow. That maid of honor of yours is a crazy trooper!! Way to go!
Just stumbled upon this and loved seeing the old pics – even though I’m behind the camera and hidden in the bridesmaids shot. Hard to believe how fast time goes!
Your hair dresser CUT HER HAIR!! Oh, hell no!
I loved the Bridesmaids movie. And that “disgusting incident” that you refer to, ummm, yeah my friends and I joked that I looked like when I was sitting on a bench in my wedding dress waiting to go down the aisle. We saw the movie three days before I got married. It was so funny!
