“Footloose” Remake: Yea or Nay?

Everybody has their something, right? And my particular something is a love for so-bad-they’re-good movies.

Yes, I’ve seen most of the classics (although it continually confuses both Lucas and Jackie that I never watched Christmas moves like “Rudolph” and “Frosty” as a kid, and they now make me watch them every holiday season to catch up).

But when it comes right down to it, there are three movies that I will watch any day and twice on Sundays. Lucky for me, they’re big hits on TV.

  1. The Cutting Edge. Hands down, my favorite movie of all time. I can say every line and sometimes still think “toe pick” to myself…but don’t say it out loud.
  2. A Few Good Men. You can’t handle the truth! Oh yes I can, Jack. Yes I can.
  3. Steel Magnolias. Not only is it a great movie, it’s my go-to film to watch when I need to cry and let out some emotions.

Now you know my secrets…and I’m about to share one of Lucas’.

He may be the world’s biggest “Footloose” fan. Yes, I realize I’m risking a very cold shoulder when he reads this, but I had to bring it up for his own sake — so that you, my beloved readers, can weigh in on whether or not the forthcoming remake is a good idea or not!

A few things to know, according to Movie Web:

  • Both Zac Efron and Chace Crawford were scheduled to play Kevin Bacon’s role…but left the movie.
  • The guy who directed the “High School Musical” series was supposed to direct this…but left the movie.
  • Kevin Bacon was offered a chance to appear in the film…but declined, saying the role was “dopey.”

Hmm…seems like three strikes.

Now to the trailer:

I dunno, guys…what do you think? “Footloose” remake: Yea or Nay? And while you’re at it — what’s your favorite bad-but-good movie of all time?

I’m so torn on this one! Mostly I’m thinking… no. One of my all time favorite movies, and I would HATE to see it remade, is Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.

Toe pick! (seriously freaking LOVE that movie)

I’m torn on Footloose – but leaning towards a big NO. On the plus side it has Dennis Quaid and I kinda love him. Also, the dancing looks INSANE (I love to watch dancing and imagine myself having that much skill). That about all I’ve got though. The plot’s exactly the same, there’s no Kevin Bacon, and I assume no Kenny Loggins music.

If Zac Efron was in it – I might be more inclined to see it – but really they should have left well enough alone!

  3. I say no to Footloose now … but I will probably see it! Or at least get it from Netflix. I’m a sucker for crappy movies, too … the sappier, the better! Although I don’t think Steel Magnolias is a guilty pleasure … that’s such a good movie!

BEST cheesy movie – Legally Blonde

I’m thinking Nay on this one!

My go-to movies I could watch anytime: Say Anything (if the children are around) or Mallrats (it they aren’t)!

  6. I’m a SUCKER for a good dance movie (case in point, I watch Stomp the Yard EVERY SINGLE TIME it’s on) but this just doesn’t look good. I think it’s the male lead. I’m just not feeling him.

    Toe pick.

  8. If it isn’t broke don’t fix it! Nay to the new Footloose, for sure. That doesn’t mean that I won’t see it though, dance movies are my guilty pleasure! Speaking of guilty pleasures, Dirty Dancing is one of my cheesy classics. I cried when Patrick Swayze died!!!

  10. I heard Footloose is a frame for frame remake like that Psycho remake was years ago. Blah. I’m going NO on Footloose. Even on video I probably won’t catch it.

I do find it interesting that KB passed up a cameo though. Speaking of him, one of my fave movies back in the day was She’s Having a Baby. Still good today!

  11. I won’t watch it in the theatres but I’ll get it from NetFlix probably just to see it.

I love Drumline, Bring It On, and especially Cutting Edge. “Toe Pick” was a favorite phrase in college.

As a passionate cinephile, and lover of the original Footloose, I have to take a pass on this film. The original is incredibly cheesy, but what it has is an incredible energy, endearing moments and one of the BEST SOUNDTRACKS OF ALL TIME! While it seems this movie does a decent job of recruiting the look of the original, it almost seems like the actors are parroting the original characters instead of investing themselves into the characters.

I’m not exactly sure Kenny Ortega leaving the film is a good or bad thing. I mean, he’s also partially responsible for “Newsies” and the near death of Christian Bale’s career. He wouldn’t have even been my first choice for this movie. My choice would have been the man responsible for the Step Up movies, Jon M. Chu, who is set to direct the new G.I. Joe film. Okay, he doesn’t direct Oscar winners either, but the man knows how to shoot a dance sequence.

I’m disappointed by how this looks right now. I’m hoping it at least creates an interest in the 80′s classic.

  13. I love the Cutting Edge! Part of it was filmed in my hometown and one of my elementary school classmates is in it. He is the goalie :) I am not too sure about the new Footloose, I may watch it.

  15. I say Nay to Footloose, but I’ll probably end up watching it on Netflix. My favorite cheesy movies are Centre Stage and Spice World. I haven’t watched the cutting edge in years, did you know they made (at least) one sequel to it?

I am like you and love really bad/cheesy movies! Footloose is one of my favorites so I’m really nervous about this one. From the trailer it looks like they try to combine the 80s fashion and talk with the 2011 music and cultures. I really wish Chace Crawford was in it but I love Jullianne Hough and Dennis Quaid. I’ll watch it just to see though!

  17. kim ross says:

I am not attached to the original version of “Footloose” so would look forward to seeing this one because of the crazy dancing. Would wait for though until I could watch it at home :)

  18. Ooh, I love good “bad movies”. Cutting Edge is a good one — and as a devoted Lost fan, I am now fairly obsessed with anything that Terry O’Quinn is in (including Young Guns, another bad-but-good movie).

Let’s see, guilty pleasure movies. Lake Placid is a good one, and definitely a surprise. Betty White was HILARIOUS (and this was made long before the rest of the world remembered what a gem she is). But I think my favorite might be Adventures in Babysitting. Adorable Elisabeth Shue + wacky 80s caper + classic lines + a young Vincent D’Onofrio in coveralls = perfection!

  19. hahaha..i love the cutting edge too! but my all time go to movie is probably A League of Their Own. I love Tom Hank’s line,’ There’s no crying in baseball!!!!” Hahahaha!

  20. That’s a big nay in my books! Its a classic! I doubt I will watch the remake.

I have more than one go to movie. That’s allowed right? :)

When Harry Met Sally – FOR SURE. I watched it just the other day. “The Scene”, in the coffee shop? You know the one. You can’t beat it.

Also, I’m a biiiiig Father of the Bride fan. I have such a soft spot for older Steve Martin movies. And he reminds me so dang much of my pops in that movie.
