Remember how, when Lucas got locked out by the cats, I used it to spark a discussion about the best ways to back up your data? (“When the Cat Locks You Out, Do You Have a Backup Plan?“)
No lie. I have been meaning to give you an update to the ways that I back up my data…and conveniently this week, the DOGS locked Lucas out.

Couldn’t make it up, folks. It’s like the blogging gods heard my thoughts. (Now if only the window washing gods would do the same…)
(BTW: I just noticed that he’s wearing the SAME SHIRT in both pictures of being locked out. It’s either a sign that that’s a very unlucky shirt or that I need to buy him some new clothes.)
Here’s the update:
- I used to use Mozy to back up my computer, but I’ve changed to Carbonite. Mozy raised its prices, which made me mad, and Carbonite had a much better user interface. Plus, it’s super easy to back up multiple computers, and I found an online discount code so backing up all of the computers my family has was simple.
- My favorite WordPress backup plugin — the one I recommended to you all in multiple posts — has started to act up. Updates were going to the server instead of email (if they saved at all) and I just couldn’t count on it anymore. With 4+ years of blogging material that I would HATE to lose, I have started to pay for automatic backups through Vaultpress. It’s spendy but worth it. I’d rather pay $15 a month now than pay with mental anguish and pain if anything happens. Vaultpress is a constant backup and it’s built by WordPress, so they can very easily get you back up and running if anything happens to your site. Don’t think it can? Just ask Meghann about what the HLS site has done to her mental state these last few weeks.

You put me on your Follow Friday!!?! Ah you made my morning!
And as for backing up…well I won’t lie, for a long time I didn’t back my blog up. But Matt (from The Athlete’s Plate) convinced me it was necessary (duhhh) and helped me get it set up. Like a week later I had an issue and had to revert to a back up and I was so glad I did it!! Everyone back up your blog!

Hi Katy!

Hey Katy,
Thanks for the shout out!
You know the geek in me had to chime in on the whole backup issue. I’ve been using WordPress Backup to Dropbox quite a bit lately with some nice results.
Basically what it does is backup your database, theme files, uploads, etc and stores it all temporarily on a folder in your hosting account. Then it transfers that complete backup to dropbox automatically so all of your files are stored off site. It’s free and super super simple to setup. Obviously if you have a lot of photos then the free DropBox account might not be enough, but it’s a great solution for a lot of people. And dropbox is pretty inexpensive anyway even you need more storage space. Just thought I’d share.
Enjoy the weekend!
