My “Rock the Run” Playlist

Quick PSA — I’m taking part in the latest #Fitblog challenge, called 3,000 in 35. We’re doing 3,000 abdominal exercises in 35 days, without a single crunch. There are about 64 people signed up already, and I’d LOVE to have you jump in! More details are here. This is Day 2, so makes sure you sign up ASAP!

I am NOT one of those people that becomes one with nature while running or working out. I depend on loud, fast music to drown out my own self-sabotaging thoughts:

Ugh, you can’t run 5 miles…what makes you think you can run 1 mile?

It’s 99 degrees and you’re running. Why are you doing this? You could be at home by the pool with a cocktail.

You’re never going to be as fast as your friends. Why even bother?

Before you feel too bad for me, you should know that these thoughts disappear once I’m really into my workout, and certainly when I’m done. But to get from Point A to Point B, I allow myself a very liberal iTunes budget, and buy dozens of songs a month.

(I figure it’s cheaper than therapy.)

So what is rocking my running playlist these days? Check it out.

  1. Rumour Has It (Adele)
  2. Jungle Flames (The DNC)
  3. Back It Up (Caro Emerald)
  4. Teach Me How to Dougie (Cali Swag District)
  5. Hot Tottiie (Usher)
  6. (Drop Dead) Beautiful (Britney Spears)
  7. Right There (Nicole Scherzinger)
  8. Don’t You Wanna Stay (Jason Aldrean)
  9. Stereo Hearts (Gym Class Heroes)
  10. Run the World (Beyonce)
  11. Written in the Stars (Tini Tempah)
  12. When Them Girls At (David Guetta)
  13. You Lie (The Band Perry)
  14. Dirty Dancer (Enrique Iglesias)
  15. California King Bed (Rihanna)
  16. Country Girl (Luke Bryan)
  17. Who Says (Selena Gomez)
  18. Tonight Tonight (Hot Chelle Rae)
  19. Super Bass (Nicki Minaj)
  20. Give Me Everything (Pitbull)

If you are a Dance Trance member, you’ll recognize a lot of songs from the list. I try and buy any song that we dance to in class, which makes running interesting — I’m always doing the dance moves in my head!

You’ll also see some slower songs, as well as a few country choices. I prefer running to really fast songs, but mixing it up, especially during fun runs, really keeps me in the zone.

  1. Great playlist! My gym playlist is very similar.

When I drive, “You Lie” is my go to, belt it out over and over until my throat hurts, pretend I’m the lead singer of The Band Perry song.

  2. Awesome! I love a good workout playlist. I see some of my own faves on here (hello, Adele!) and some new ones to try.

Right now I am loving “Just Fine” by Mary J. It isn’t new, but it has rotated back on to my playlist (either first track or somewhere in the middle). Great beat and gets me in the right mindset to crush my workout!

    Thanks for sharing :)

I’m totally with you Katy – I need nice hard charging music to keep going during a workout.

I needed good running/workout music so bad in fact that I started a company called “Rock My Run” (not named after your playlist, I swear!) and put 14 years of DJing & creating mixes to work for others. You can download seamless DJ mixes free while we’re in beta.

Check it out, let me know what you think!
