What to Watch: Hulu

Now that Lucas and I are cable-free, we’ve been spending a lot of time doing NON-TV things. I’m working on my blog at night, getting ahead on work, playing with my dogs…it’s amazing!

But we do still have some time in front of the tube, which means that we’re usually looking for content on Hulu (we’re Hulu Plus subscribers) and Netflix.

What’s tough is that despite the fact that each service has hundreds (!!!) of shows and movies, it’s very difficult to sort through and actually find something we want to watch. I’ve even googled, looking for watch guides, and haven’t had much luck.

So, here’s my take:

1. The Daily Show With Jon Stewart

I absolutely love this show, but never stayed up late enough to watch it live. I always just caught clips the next day. And I hated navigating the Comedy Central site to even do that.

On Hulu, the program is delayed by a day, but it’s perfect because I’m able to watch the episodes while I’m riding my bike (indoor trainer) or on my iPhone. Plus, I can subscribe to the show so new episodes are pushed into my Hulu queue.

2. 30 Rock

It’s the reason I know that I am just like Liz Lemon. But seriously…one of the best shows I’ve ever watched. I can’t believe it took me so long!

3. Shark Tank

I’d never even heard of this show before Hulu, but now I can’t stop watching. I love predicting which sharks are going to bid for which projects, and when they team up, I jump up and down like I’m at a Patriots game.

Some of the products are wacky, but some are really cool! And it gives me new negotiating skills, should I ever need to convince an angel investor to buy into KatyWidrick.com for 15%.

4. Law and Order: SVU

This has long been one of my favorite shows (Mariska Hargitay is on my list…you know the list I’m talking about) but with Hulu, I’m able to go back to the first season and watch all of the episodes again. Take that, TNT!

5. Rookie Blue

I actually hit play on an episode in this series because I needed some background noise that I didn’t need to pay attention to — and then this show sucked me in. It stars the girl from “Stick It,” which I am not ashamed to say I watched and loved. Jeff Bridges was in it, too. But I digress.

This show is about a group of rookie cops that try and lean on each other to get through some scary times on the job. It rocks.

Overall, I really love Hulu. I’ve had some buffering issues, but customer service has been quick to help. Sure, the commercials are annoying but they’re only 60-seconds (Netflix has none).

What else should I add to my lineup?

Have you started watching ‘Parks and Recreation’? I honestly think it’s the funniest show on television!

If you like dramas, I’m really loving Suits and Royal Pains right now. I’m not sure if they’re on Hulu though. For comedies, I recommend Modern Family and Happy Endings. Happy watching!

I totally love Rookie Blue and 30 Rock. I would also add HIMYM if it’s in there (or on netflix). That’s my favorite show that I used to miss when we didn’t have a DVR.

I’d add Arrested Development, Big Bang Theory and 1,000 percent Modern Family. Everyone (especially melissamangs ) RAVES about Friday Night Lights, so that’s the next TV show I plan on Netflxiing.

Parks & Rec is seriously the funniest show on TV right now. I agree with everyone who is suggesting Modern Family. If you’re a fan of dark humor, I also recommend Wilfred.

It’s old, but WKRP in cincinatti still holds up pretty well. Jack of Trades if you’re a bruce campbell fan at all

I am cable free at the moment as well and Hulu and Netflix have definitely given me a chance to find some new to me shows.

Friday Night Lights is wonderful and it’s not just about football. HIMYM- funny! Recently I have been watching Ally McBeal on Netflix and absolutely LOVE it!
