I’m speaking/emceeing the 2011 Internet Technology Summit on Wednesday, and I’m super excited (pssst: you can follow the #its2011 hashtag!). The founder asked me to say a few opening remarks about the state of technology (to 500+ people — zoinks!), and I decided to try a shortcut — reading my thoughts aloud to the Dragon Dictation app on my iPhone.
As you can imagine, this is not what I plan on saying tomorrow:

but it did make me laugh.
And it reminded me that even with the most amazing advancements, sometimes we have to do the hard work ourselves.
So, I’m off to type up my notes (they’re currently scribbled out by hand — I wrote them in the dimly lit bar last night while visiting my lovey) and hopefully, not use the phrase “Bird can call me at work” tomorrow or ever.

I do a lot of transcription work so not gonna lie … I’m kind of glad technology isn’t able to transcribe very well yet, ha

I had no idea dragon had a app- I’m going to check that out , even if it’s not the most accurate thing in the world.
I use Dragon at work to dictate some patient stuff, and I find that it’s fairly accurate. The biggest problem is medical terms- dragon offers a medical dictation program but its 100x more than the regular dictation software.
9x out of 10 I just type the note- but with a complex patient, that takes more time I try to dictate to save a little time.
Technology has really helped healthcare out – i’m thankful for technology every day.

Or or or what happened to the doctor’s baby?!?!
Oh my gosh that is hysterical! Kinda how I feel about the google speak app on my phone. It never comes out right and after trying 5 times, I realize I could’ve typed it in faster.

I tried dragon dictation too but my kids wouldn’t stop talking in the background. Overall I prefer to handwrite my blog posts out on my ipad with the WritePad app and a stylus – over time I’ve gotten quite good at writing in such a way that the app can read my writing.

Really great question at the end of this post. My answer is schedule doctor appointments — my doctor is actually in the building where I work, so rather than staying on hold on the phone or waiting for their online request to come through (takes a few days), I wander down to the office and schedule appointments in person. 5 minutes tops. Bam!
To do lists and little notes are definitely best when I write them down. I love the feeling of actually crossing things off of my lists!

Damn, I was actually getting excited about dictation apps! I do a LOT of transcribing as a financial journalist – my interviews are usually 30-45 minutes long, and we regularly run roundtables which are around 2 hours long, and take me most of the day to transcribe.
I tested a dictation app on the iPad and it seemed to work great – much better than yours haha. I’m trying to convince my boss to buy an iPad so we can all save ourselves some time. I don’t expect it to pick up everything (especially because bankers speak a LOT of jargon) but it would certainly help me a lot!
