I’ve been feeling homesick recently, which is a bit bizarre…because there’s no home to be sick for.
- I graduated from high school 13 years ago and don’t keep in touch with many classmates.
- I graduated from college 9 years ago and never considered that city my home.
- My parents have moved away from the house that I lived in as a young adult, and while they have a lovely place that has a lot of meaning, it was never home.
- Plus, we moved around so much when I was little that I got used to being in different places.

So what’s the deal? Maybe I’m just yearning for the feeling of being in the right place at the right time. Florida is a wonderful state, and even after 7 1/2 years, I don’t regret moving here. But I’ve never considered it to be my forever home, and I guess I just have a bit of wanderlust.

I think I know what set it off. Lucas sent me this Pulse of the Nation podcast with Scott Van Pelt and Ryan Russilo’s reaction to end of the Red Sox season…in full, wicked awesome accent.
Just like home.
And since I had the Boston blues, and some new equipment to test out (the Rode microphone — full review to come soon) I thought I’d do the thing that hundreds of other bloggers did months and months ago…
…The Accent Vlog. Maybe it’s been so long that I can be the first one to start a comeback?

Sorry to hear you’re feeling homesick. Maybe it’s partly because it’s fall, which is so different in MA compared to FL?
If you get back to New England any time soon, let me know! I never get to Boston as often as I’d like. (And I’m in YOUR state right now!)
Even at 21 I feel “silly” being homesick from time to time, but I guess it can happen at any age, no matter what your home situation or location is. I live about 3 hours from home, so I do get to go occasionally. But I moved out when I was 17 and haven’t lived there since. And I’ll always be a New England girl at heart
Loved this! Especially because I’m a transplanted New Englander too:) I grew up outside Boston, went to college and spent summer in New Hampshire, then moved to the mid-west and have been here half my life now. I don’t think I ever had a Boston accent. I did say “wicked” and “soda.” Y’all is so convenient and easy to pick up. My husband is a native Kansas and I’m just gonna say that he often talks WRONG! Of course, he’d disagree. Maybe if I stop teasing him for saying things like “Missour-ah,” he’d help me figure out how to do a vlog:)

I feel like I understand your perspective because, like you, I moved a lot — my parents got divorced and so by the time I went to college (where of course I changed apartments/dorms every year), I’d moved something like 12 times.
I’ve never felt like one of my post-college apartments was “home” — I’m not sure exactly what I’m looking for, but I just know I’ll find it in a place one day. Until then, I move every year to try to find the ‘perfect’ place… maybe that’s the problem! Gotta set down roots sometime, right?
Loved this blog & vlog! I definitely had that shock the other week when I heard Clean Eating Chelsey’s voice for the first time – woah accent! I’m from Rhode Island and I say everything like you do. You have a really nice clear accent that’s not really affected, but I think New England has affected me more than you. I say things like I “sawr” that movie (instead of saw), but I think that’s the only word of that type I change – like, I would never saw Florider (I HATE it when people say that haha). I think I was mostly interested that you look a lot different from the way I pictured you because in your normal picture you’re dressed up fancy but here you were dressed normal so that was a little different. Thanks for doing the vlog!

I’ve never heard you talk before! You didn’t sound like I expected, but I didn’t really hear an accent.
I did this a few months ago and I have a weird hybrid accent too. I’m originally from Maryland (which doesn’t really have an accent), went to college in Vermont and have lived in Georgia for 9 years. I still don’t say y’all though.

For the answers to your questions, I’d answer all of them the same way. I’m a Massachusetts girl who lived in FL for 7 months
I don’t think I have an intense Boston accent, but sometimes, when I hear myself say something, I actually cringe. I’ve had several different patients at work as me if I’m from North Dakota, which I find odd. I wonder why they think that?
Great post. I am 29 and have moved around a lot too. I was born in Ft Lauderdale, then at 5 moved to Sicily for a year, then to Connecticut until high school, high school in Ocala, FL, college at Uconn, then back to Ocala for a few years, then Orlando for about a year and a half and now I live in San Jose, CA! Phew, sounds like a lot! I left most of my family in Florida and some in CT and know what you mean about homesick. I think I mostly miss my family members, not so much the places I have lived. For now I like California and have no plans of moving. Also I call it a carriage too but always get teased! I have a hard time with the words here and hair, also gulf and golf.
Hi, I moved a lot growing up too. Mostly I have lived between Florida and Connecticut, but also lived in Sicily for a year. Now I live in San Jose, CA and do get homesick for my family, not necessarily moving back. I have a hard time with hair and here and gulf and golf. I get teased for calling it a carriage
OOPS! I got my email wrong in the first post and thought it didn’t go through! LOL
Hi Katy! I loved the vlog! You sound about like what I though you would! I haven’t done the vlog because I don’t have a video device. Working on that. Not sure if I should get a better camera first or a video recorder we’ll see. I enjoyed hearing you!

It’s so funny how people can talk so differently in different parts of the country, and how I can live so far from you but feel like we sound + say things very similarly, and how my husband + I can say things completely differently, and we grew up 5 miles from each other. We’ve been talking about his a lot lately since he is a communication arts teacher and has been teaching his middle schoolers about dialects. Our biggest ones we argue about are route + syrup. Like I said, 5 miles apart but say them completely differently!

I can relate just left upstate NY, where I grew up, to come back out to Cali. It was an amazing week with family and the leaves had just started to turn…. On the flip side, I can go to the beach in Jan. when they have snow! Just have to remember those bonuses

I’ve got a South Louisiana accent through and through! I did the accent vlog back in January and it’s one of my favorites! It’s also my 2nd highest viewed post, awesome!
