I’m ink-free. I’ve long thought about getting a tattoo but I always end at these two questions:
- What do I feel strongly enough about that I’m willing to permanently brand my body? I mean, I love my dogs, but I don’t need Faegan tattooed on my leg or anything.
- Where would I put it? I’d want to be able to cover it for professional reasons, and I don’t want it to stretch with pregnancy or weight gain (or sag with age).
You see my dilemma.
But Pinterest — the more addictive site I’ve been on in a long time — has become my new pusher. “Come on, Katy, look at all the great designs! Come on, Katy, it’s just art that you put on your body!”
These are a few of my recent pins. I don’t know if I’m any closer to getting a tattoo, but it’s fun to think about it.

I have five, actually! Soon to be six. Lyrics on the inside of my wrist (“the world has its shine”), a meaningless little joined star, heart, and moon on my right boob (that I may eventually get redone with something that matters to me), two macbook keys that spell “<3" on the outside of my right wrist, a trail of decreasingly sized stars that go over my left collarbone/shoulder towards the nape of my neck with the words "be clearly aware" (it's a vanGogh quote), and a baroque frame with the silhouettes of two trapeze ladies in the air on my back between my shoulder blades (my mothers were circus-performing trapeze artist lesbians).
Soon I will get some words inscribed on my ribs, but I'm still trying to decide between children's book quotes, Whitman, and Fall Out Boy lyrics. It's a hard, hard life.
I love tattoos. I think they're beautiful, but they're also kind of addictive. Once you get one, you want more!
I have five as well. Two rosebuds on my hip (drawn by my ex, an artist), a unicorn on my left ankle (for freedom and magic), a wrap of pansies on my right ankle (just because), the roses off my (first) wedding invitation on my right shoulder, and a full back piece of five Chinese symbols (courage, endurance, faith, peace & strength) and lotus flowers. The symbols I chose for their meaning, but I got the full back tattoo to cover some scars.
Why do I have them? I love them. Love, love, love tattoos. Have since I was a teenager in the 80s (back before it was cool). I’m super fussy about what I get, and who does them for me – they are forever, and I have to be committed to it. My back piece took me about five years to chose a design to cover the scars!
But to each their own, right? Mine work for me.

I really, really wanted a tattoo in college, and the only reason I didn’t get one was that on the day I went to the parlor, I decided to get my bellybutton pierced and didn’t have enough money for both.
Personally, I am very, very glad I never got one. Sometimes I still think about it — a friend of mine has a trail of stars on her foot and ankle, and I think it looks great. But then I’d always have to be finding shoes to cover up something like that. I also feel that, if there’s no story behind it, then you just end up looking ridiculous the older you get. Stretched out, faded tattoos are not a good look for anyone in their 50s and older.
I’m not saying I’ll never get one. A friend of mine has a very personal and meaningful tattoo he got after fighting cancer. But when all is said and done, I don’t think not getting a tattoo is something that I would regret, if that makes sense.

I have 2 – one I got when I was 17 just because I could, but there other has a lot of meaning. It is on my wrist and says “believe” – a reminder for me. I am ink free, too. I went through stages in both high school and college where I really wanted to get a tatoo. I thought about many different possibilities – like getting my mantra of “believe” tatooed somewhere on my body. The word “believe” helped me through many tough times.. and I just kept believeing in myself and in those around me.. to pull through tough times.
I also considered getting some sort of irish symbol somewhere on my body to represent my heritage… and putting my late grandmother’s initials somewhere – because I was super close to her as a young child.. and she died from cancer when I was only 9.
But – I never did. I don’t think I needed to put those things on my body to make them any more real in my life. They still mean a lot to me.. and they always will. Permanently a part ofme.. whether in ink.. or not.

I have 4, all of which are as much a part of me now as my piercings and freckles. They just are at this point.
I have tiger eyes (my 1st roommate in college was an artist, she drew them for me) and a full tiger across my back – my mother told me, when she began what became her short-lived spiritual journey, that my animal would be a tiger. It stuck. It’s one of the few things I can recall her telling me about myself.
I also have her birthday on my left wrist. My sister’s idea, which I stole because I liked it so much.
Lastly, I have my son’s handprint on my left shoulder, angled just the way he’d place his hand whenever I held him on my hip – which was as often as possible – he’s too big for that now.
I tend to get tattoos when I need them. It sounds odd, but it’s never been a drunken “oh-look-what-I-did” thing for me. It’s always been very personal. Even the 1st one I got while out of town at age 17. It may have been rebellious, just like my belly ring at age 15, but it was so much more than that at the same time.
I’d like to get more, when I need them. Right now I don’t. But I do enjoy looking at beautiful artwork. So thanks, I know where I’ll be spending my lunch break

I have two that I got at the same time and are in the same location…so I guess they are technically one. (although I thought of them seperately).
The first is a filagree cross I loved the design. I got it in seminary as a symbol of my connection to God and the ministry I was entering.
The other is the word Redeemed in Hebrew lettering. I did all the work to look it up in a lexicon and make sure it was the right word and meaning. For me the word is to be brought out of a place and saved. It is connected to my mental health and my physical health.

I wonder why people worry about what they will look like when they are 80, did they worry that when they had a cigarette? that beer? when they were getting a suntan? and everything else that can age and change our body? I live for now, not for 80.

I have one tattoo and plans for the second. I too have problems deciding on something; usually I ask “will I still like this when I’m a saggy, baggy 80-years-old?”
I have the Mandarin Chinese symbol of “lucky” on my left outer ankle – I’ve been extremely lucky in my life, so much so that my mom nicknamed me “Lucky” as a kid who emerged out of accidents with nary a scratch.
The second one I plan to get is to get the wing from the sandals of Hermes on my right outer ankle to commemorate my conquering the half marathon at age 37. I plan on doing another one next year before I turn 40, and will probably add a star or some indication of multiple races.
I want to get more, but there hasn’t been anything of significance or meaning that I want to permanently put on my body.

I went back and forth for years on whether or not I wanted one – and while I was in college I decided to get the “scales of justice” on my back. I’m a libra & was a criminology major so it made perfect sense! But when I got to the tattoo parlor my appointment had to be rescheduled…and it was the very end of the semester so I couldn’t reschedule it because I was going home. Cut to 7 years later & I finally got one – but it’s totally different! I have the chain ring from my first mountain bike between my shoulder blades. For me it’s a symbol of the first “endurance” event I did (a 35 miles on single track MTB trails). I have grand plans of expanding it into a triathlon themed tattoo by adding a “swim” and “run” on to it. But I need to reach a couple more milestones before then. And if I never do add it? I’ll always remember my first mountain bike and that time of my life!

I have two. Both on my back so not often seen, this summer was out in swimming costume and had a couple of people comment that I didn’t look the type for tattoos (I wasn’t quite sure what to make of that!). What they are isn’t meaningful, they’re just pretty patterns, but my mother paid for the first one for my 20th birthday and and my best friend for the second for my 30th birthday. So I always have their gifts with me, which is symbolic in it’s own way I suppose! I didn’t think about what would happen when I got old or if I lost or put on a significant amount of weight, but I guess if they change and need other work then I can live with that and if someone sees them when I’m old and wrinkly and thinks “yuk” then that really isn’t my issue, ’cause I love them.
Yes, I have one. I didn’t get it until I was 31 and a mother to 3 boys though! I thought long and hard about what I wanted to get. I wanted something meaningful. I got a celtic motherhood knot on my left wrist. I love it. I want another one, but I’m trying to decide what to get…perhaps I should browse Pinterest for some ideas

All of the comments about “I don’t want a tattoo because I’m going to wrinkle” make me twitch a little though. Everyone gets old and wrinkly, it doesn’t matter if you have a tattoo. Everyone who gets one knows that they’re eventually going to look a little different. Spending time worrying about how you’re skin is going to look in 40 or 50 years seems a little silly. Plus, at a certain point most people with “old people skin” stop wearing clothes that show off their tattooed areas to the general public

I have three…Actually, I posted on this same issue just a few weeks back. I struggled, wondered where to put them due to career reasons and that same daunting question of what will it look like when I’m older. I have a tattoo on my ankle of a dolphin jumping out of a wave that is a music staff with music notes above the dolphin; when my Mom posed that 80 yr old wrinkles and sagging skin question, I stated the dolphin would be swimming in the wave rather than jumping out of it. I have a rose bud with yin-yang in the stem on my breast and a back piece (that only shows with a bathing suit of a thin strapped tank top (not something I would wear to work) it is of the yellow brick road, bold ruby red slippers in the foreground and the witch’s castle bursting with light beams out of the window and a shooting star off to the side.
Each tattoo symbolizes something very special and I designed all of them.
I have a tattoo, and I got it when I was 18….like 18 and a few days. I can’t say that I love the design anymore – but I love what it represents and reminds me of, and I definitely don’t regret getting it. That being said, I would love to someday add on to the design and make it more my own design so that I DO love it.
Also, my tattoo is on my torso. It only shows if I am wearing a two piece bating suit. I would LOVE to get a tattoo on my wrist/hand or ankle, but I just don’t know how I feel about people being able to see it all of the time. If it was awesome, that would be great and no problem, but what if it wasn’t? The ink is permanent after all.

1. I have an ankh.
2. A “nightingale”.
3. A scary moon/sun man that covers nearly my entire back.
4. A lotus flower tramp stamp.
5. A heart with an “X” through it because I was going through a bad breakup.Yeah, really.

I dread when I have children explaining to them the crap that takes up residence on my back. The only blessing is that they ARE on my back and I can’t see them. Stick with temporary tattoos.

I don’t like tattoos. Ironic, since my husband has close to 200….but I think I just don’t like them for ME. They are fine on other people.
Despite the fact that I dislike them, I do have one of my dog’s name, Mable. She was hit by a car and killed and I had this weird need to get her name tattooed on my wrist. That’s the only one I have and while I don’t regret it, I honestly would do without it now. Thinking back, it was an impulse thing and if I had thought about it, I wouldn’t have done it. But my friend owns a tattoo shop so I just went up there and he did it in about 3 minutes. It does have special meaning to me, though, so I wouldn’t get it removed.
I think it’s silly when I am hanging out at the shop and people come in on a Friday and say something like, “YEAH! PAY DAY! I want a tattoo!” and they look in a book to get an idea for a tattoo. They don’t think about it–they just want a tattoo to be cool and say they have a tattoo and they don’t care what it is. So ridiculous.
Tattoos with serious meaning behind them are great. I love that concept. However, most tattoos out there are the result of someone thinking it would look cool at the moment and so they get it tattooed on their body.. forever. Lame.
But yeah.. Marshall has enough tattoos to go around. Anybody want one of his?? He has a shark.. and a bottle of mustard.. and a pelican.. and a Packers symbol.. and a coffee mug.
OH! One thing I am excited for is I get to give Marshall a tattoo that says “wife”. I haven’t decided where or what it will look like, yet, but that’s one thing all his friends’ wives do eventually. They don’t tattoo their name on their husbands–just the word “wife” somewhere. Since they are all covered head to toe in tattoos anyway, it’s not a huge deal. But I think it’ll be fun to use the gun.

I got a star on my left hip when I was 17 (my parents took me for my birthday gift). It doesn’t have any meaning but I knew I’d love it, and I still do.
And 2 years ago I got a ribbon-bow tramp stamp to celebrate running a half marathon (and because my husband thinks tramp stamps are hot and I like to make him happy too!). I actually drew the sketch myself so it’s fun that it’s personalized.

I have a small Sankofa (http://www.adinkra.org/images/sank_lg.gif) which translates to “go back and take it” (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sankofa). It is on my right side/torso, right underneath my arm. You can only really see it above a thin bikini strap. I got it when I was going through a rough time, so to me it meant learning from the past and using it for the future.
I have a few, still like them all. That said, I don’t think about them all that often. I do have one major one in mind, but I’m in no rush as it would be on my forearm, so I want to get it right.
I think that the aesthetic value of the design is just as important (or even more important) than it having some deep meaning. If tattoos are art, it’s not necessarily about what it makes you think about, but how it makes you feel when you’re looking at it. Yes, most great art does have a deeper meaning or a narrative behind it, but it’s not great art (not that tattoos are great art, but they can be really fun to look at) if it doesn’t make you feel something just by looking at it. A picture is worth a thousand words, as they say. Oh, and most quotation-based tattoos look pretty lame and pretentious to this writer, but please don’t let that stop you. I have some stars on me that I still like 8 years later. I get annoyed when people are like “what do they mean?” My usual answer is “not much, I just really like the way 5-pointed stars look.”
“There’s no need either for music to make people think! … It would be enough if music could make people listen, despite themselves and despite their petty mundane troubles, and never mind if they’re incapable of expressing anything resembling an opinion.” – Claude Debussy on experiencing art.
Finally, and most importantly, I think it is kind of ridiculous, hackneyed, and almost cliche that people are so concerned what their tattoos are going to look like when they’re 80. If you’re that concerned that your body (including any tattoos you get) is going to look different, and let’s face it, kind of old and saggy, when you’re 80 or older maybe you should examine your priorities. If I make it to 80, I will just be happy that I’m still kicking. But yes, if you’re that narcissistic and worried about keeping up appearances, don’t get a tattoo, but rather put the $250 it would have cost you in an interest bearing savings account and don’t touch it and hope that there is enough in there to buy all the cosmetic surgery you’re going to need to deal with your vanity. Tattoos on old people are kind of cool in my book. But that said, there’s nothing wrong with having no tattoos either.
Nope. I can’t say it’s for me. I don’t need the extra attention, and I change my mind much too often. Power to those who have one they’re proud of though.

Ironically, he’s not big on tattoos, so out of respect for him, never got more. I’d probably have a whole back piece by now! He has an awesome idea for an architecture related one, but I can’t convince him to get more ink. I still like my tattoo and don’t regret it, but I do wish I would have put more thought into it. Don’t do it. This is something people tend to feel strongly about one way or the other. I’m not against it necessarily; I just know that what I strongly believe in today may not be the same statement I want to make five, ten, or 35 years down the road. People evolve, and my views on things evolve. For me, I think it’s best to document those changing perspectives in journals, on virtual or physical collages, etc. instead of on my body in a medium that can’t really be edited or revised later. What I say today is an imprint of where I am in life and in my thoughts at this point. I know I’m continually evolving; so, I don’t want today’s message permanently etched in my body.
…my two cents.
At the same time, I do find some of them quite beautiful… and occasionally tempting. But then I remember I can find other ways to express myself.
I love tattoos! If they were more socially acceptable I’d have a bunch, but I have two-neither or which any of my coworkers know about. The first is No Regrets in Chinese on my back. I’m Chinese so I had multiple family members write it out to be sure. My mom died of cancer and my dad was a marine so on my left rib cage I have a cancer ribbon entwined with a dog tag with my dad’s number. I love them!
I don’t have any, although I’ve always wanted one. Like you, as a professional I have to get one that can be hidden, and one that won’t stretch with pregnancy as well. So, that pretty much eliminates most ways to get one. I like the look of some of them, but they have to be done right. There are a lot of REALLY tacky and ugly tattoos out there (along with many beautiful ones too).

The summer before I turned 20, I was working at a henna shop. This inevitably meant that my body was absolutely covered in henna almost all the time. It was one of those absent-minded things where you’d have the pen in your hand and couldn’t stop yourself… The one image I constantly would find myself penning was a small wave on/around my foot region. Anytime I had henna, I guarantee there’d be a wave on me. When I went back to school and, by default, ran out of henna, I started using a permanent marker. This lasted for over 4 months and I decided I wanted it to be forever (and was sick of redoing it every week or so). I knew that one thing which would never change would be my love of the ocean and, even if I’m hundreds of miles away, the small wave on the inside of my right ankle (the same one drawn by me) reminds me that you’re never too far from a beach state of mind, and to just go with the flow.

I have a tattoo of a firework and the word “Strength” on my right ankle. I’m hoping to add 26.2 to the tat this weekend (I ran my first marathon about a month ago). The firework has multiple meanings for me and the “Strength” is for Philippians 4:13. The 26.2 speaks for itself.
I’m 41 – I got my tat last summer, at the age of 40.

I do! YIKES! After World War II, my grandfather built the house that my father grew up in himself, and the it had this huge old front door with a skeleton key. After my grandparents passed away my family sold the house, but my two sisters and I got the skeleton key tattooed on our ribcages. It hurt, but, I love it.

I have 16 now and I love every single one of them. People ask me sometimes what made me get tattooed – its a personal choice
What makes someone cut their hair the way they do ? What makes someone dress the way they do? Thats the beauty of the day and age we are in. We are allowed to pick and choose how we look.
All my tattoos have meaning and I can remember exactly what happened on the day I got each tattoo..
