No New Year’s Resolutions

I’m not making any New Year’s resolutions.

Well, maybe just one.

That was such a fun shoot. I had all of the Growing Bolder employees jump in front of a white(ish) wall, while I held down the shutter for continuous pictures. That made for some awesome outtakes, but we all got at least one good picture. Then my boss cut us all out, put us on a blank wall picture that I’d taken, added the text and then I tweaked the whole thing again in Lightroom 3.

Ta da!

I’m the queen of jumping but I think I need to find some more poses:

And also, learn to keep my belly covered.

In all seriousness, I’ve decided not to make any New Year’s resolutions for 2012. There are goals I have, but none that start and end (or succeed and fail) just because of the new calendar year. They’re the same goals, hopes and dreams that I work toward every day, and if past experience is any proof, making resolutions just sets me up to fail, or to feel like a failure.

I don’t have a problem with resolutions in general, and it’s a great time to get support with whatever your goal is — so many others are committing to it at the same time!

But if you want to get healthy, start today. If you want to run a 5K, make your plan today. If your goal is to sleep more, drink more water, take walks, be nicer to family…start today. You’ll already be in the right mindset for January 1, without the stress of feeling like January 2 is a make or break date.

But its such a great jump shot pose! I love it! And that’s an awesome Growing Bolder picture.
I planned to break out my Bob Harper Pure Burn Super Strength DVD (a kickass 65 min program) to kick off the new year, but I decided to get started with it this week instead. We’ll see if I am able to lift my coffee cup tomorrow.

  2. I don’t make resolutions either. When I want to set goals, I set them whenever I’m ready to tackle them and that’s rarely on January 1st. Although, I would like to wear more heels this year so maybe my resolution will be buy them. Or be taller than most people in the world since that’s what happens when I wear heels.

So that jumping photo had to be Photoshopped with all of you jumping separately. I can’t see something that perfect happening with everyone at once. Trampoline? Or white men CAN jump?

  5. wow, you are a jumping photo pro. i always seem to get caught coming down from my jump and it’s just not cute…

i am making a couple goals for 2012, but i do agree with you that a lot of my personal goals are something i plan to continue to work towards, not just call quits when 2013 rolls around.

  6. I completely agree! As soon as Christmas was done with I went right back to where I should be: eating clean and exercising. There is no reason to wait until January 1st to start something that you want to stick!

    Love the jumping pose!

I love this post. Not only am I not in the right mindset currently to make realistic and achievable NYRs, I also want to make them at a different time of the year. Like March 1.

  8. This is great Katy! I don’t do resolutions either. I don’t think we need a timeframe like New Years to resolve to change or bring new things to light!

Yes please show more belly! Specifically here!!!

I agree that there’s no better time than today to get started on any goals one might have. Although, people need to do whatever works for them. So if knowing that there are plenty of others in the same boat works, use it to your advantage.

  14. I agree with Jan 1 not being a magical day for starting healthy goals. I like Jan to review where I’m moving with all my goals in life over the last year and into the new year.

BTW your jump pose is awesome and involves a rubber spine.

First off I would like to say superb blog! I had a quick question which I’d like to ask if you do not mind. I was interested to find out how you center yourself and clear your thoughts prior to writing. I have had difficulty clearing my mind in getting my thoughts out there. I truly do enjoy writing but it just seems like the first 10 to 15 minutes tend to be wasted simply just trying to figure out how to begin. Any recommendations or tips? Many thanks!

      Elinor…great question — but I don’t have an equally wonderful answer. :)

I don’t really face writer’s block very often. For me, catharsis is in the writing, so I definitely write first and edit later. I do stay organized, which helps — I use an editorial calendar so I’m never grasping for ideas, and when I really don’t feel like posting, I don’t!

But maybe someone else has some ideas…

I also don’t think that blog posts need to be perfect. You could edit for weeks and still not have it 100% *right,* so I’d encourage you to get as close as you can and then just hit publish.
