I’m a busy girl. I have a 9-5(ish) job, a social calendar and a part-time blogging gig (you know it!) that demand almost every second of my time.
Like so many of you, I have to make decisions — I won’t call them sacrifices. I have to choose to do one thing over another, and it’s not always easy.
I think that makes me relatable. Because it’s not easy for me to commit to healthy living.
On a whim, I decided to tape a quickie vlog for you, with two of my secrets. Here are the things I do to set myself up for success.
If, after watching, you have a tip to add, let me know in the comments: How do you work working out into your schedule?

This is something I deal with all. the. time. I run my own business, have 2 kids (not old enough to be home alone), and my husband works from 6 am – 3 pm. We have swimming lessons and dance class three nights/week. And dinner to cook, dishes to wash, homework to finish .. you know. The usual.
My solution, and I’ve gotten myself used to it, is to roll out of bed at 5 am for my morning runs (earlier if I’m doing a longer run). I also leave work around 3:30 a couple times/week to hit the gym for weights – or sneak it in during swimming/dance since they’re at the Y.
I’ve found throughout my life that if something is important to you, there’s always time to do it. Priorities are internally negotiable, so it’s just the mental game to make it work!

I love what you said, “I’ve found throughout my life that if something is important to you, there’s always time to do it.” Something to think about.

I agree this is not easy. Many evenings I feel like I need to choose between blogging or working on my part-time gig vs. working out.
Most always working out wins (because it will help my health long-term), but it’s challenging because I want to do it all — all the time!

I always pack my workout clothes and take them to work so I can go directly to the gym afterward. Or, if I know there is something else that I want to do at night, I’ll go during my lunch break.

I feel like this is such a relatable topic because everyone is trying to juggle so much. I also pack all my gym clothes so I can go to the gym right after work. If my work day extends too long or I feel too busy, I’ll go home and have dinner then try to a quick BodyRock or living room workout in the evening. I try to keep in mind that no matter how low intensity or quick my workout is, it’s better than nothing. Then usually once I get going, I’m committed!

I do the same thing. I plan ALL my workouts. And a lot of them are with personal trainers or with my group when I run, so I have to show up because someone is waiting for me. So, if there are people out there who are horrible at keeping a scheduled workout but want to try it, schedule those workouts with friends and you’ll be much more likely to keep to it because someone else is counting on you.

And that’s my workout suggestion.

Great Tips! I find that going to the gym after work is really hard for me because I am so tired from a full work day. So I try to go in the morning. I make it a part of my morning routine. And if i can’t get out of bed, I pack a gym bag and will go after work.
It is important to always have gym stuff with you so you can go whenever you have time to squeeze in a good workout!

I schedule mine too! I actually just started doing that, and I’ve found that it is really helping. Also, making a plan to go work out with a friend if probably the easiest and most fun way for me to stay motivated. I’m a people pleaser, so I know if I’ve committed to someone else, I really have to make sure I show up!

I wake up really really really early to workout before work. It gives me time to run, time to stretch, cool down, eat, shower, and get ready. Sure, I’m tired earlier than I would be, but at the end of the day, I’m glad I went running.

I am an after work worker-outer, too.. although, my after work obligations aren’t plentiful.. I don’t have human children and I am kinda boring, so working out fits in perfectly. I like working out, I treat it like a hobby instead of a chore.
Love you!

plan, plan, plan. And say NO to other commitments or requests if you need to. Saturday mornings are my long work out days and it’s permanently on the calendar. Very few things override it. It’s ok to make dinner an hour later if that means you can fit in a work out that would otherwise pass you by.

For me, I make it a priority. I just do it. It’s not a thought of “will I go to the gym today?” but “what time will I be going today?”

Having both a plan and a target event is how I keep on track. I know if I miss a run or cross training day, I will pay for it on race day. I am actually struggling with this right now because I am in between events.
I don’t really see it as “fitting in fitness” as much as “fitting in the other stuff around fitness.” I guess that just means that when I look at my day I have two things I absolutely need to do 1) work, and 2) work out. Everything else is what can be juggled, my workout time is just never one of those things that is juggled. I’m a single, childless 26-year-old though, so my plate isn’t that full yet. But I do think it’s important to put fitness at the very top of your priority list and make sure those around you know how important it is.

I always brought my gym gear to work with me so I could go immediately after work, before I went home. If I went home first, I wouldn’t end up going at all. I recently started a fitness program where we actually have to sign in for each class, they make sure we are showing up! That helps!

Good point, Katy. When my schedule is wacky, I definitely schedule early morning workouts that aren’t my typical. It’s a helpful way to remind myself the workout is going to happen regardless of a busy schedule.
