What Propels Me

A quick personal note…I have just signed on for several longterm projects with brands that I really like and trust, for posts and events that are far more than your standard and BORING reviews. But that does mean you’ll be seeing some more sponsored content on this website. I will continue to work to bring you quality posts, and promise that I’m trying to walk a line between supporting my very expensive blogging hobby and creating a blog that you like. For more on why I accept some sponsored opportunities, check out this post.

The word propel is and has always been one of my favorites. It just connotes action…forward movement…journey. So when Propel Zero and Glam Media asked me to answer the question:

“What Propels You?”

I jumped (not literally, although in light of the theme, that would have been cool!). It’s something that I think all of us need to answer every day, if we want to continue working toward and setting new goals.

First, a quick story. Because if this guy isn’t a prime example of movement and action, I don’t know what is. And it will help illustrate why I do what I do.

Joe Johnston is 67 years old and one of the world’s best pole vaulters — not just for his age, although he kicks butt in his group. I’ve shared his story before (read all about it here) but I never shared the video that I helped produce. It’s a must watch. (Embedded below or linked here.)

I had the chance to visit his self-built “Joe Dome” and watch him fly. His muscles tensed, his sweat dripped and his smile nearly broke his face.

67, and still loving life. Still trying to set records. Still trying to figure out what he can do to be happier, healthier and more of a role model.

And that’s what propels me, too. (Not the pole vaulting, because I am scared of heights.) I am 32, and hope to be 92 some day, walking (running?), smiling, engaged in my community and helping prove that it’s never too late to follow your dreams.

So I watch what I eat, exercise, try to have fun…pursue my passions at work and at home…and spend every day feeling blessed for what my body allows me to do.

I love setting goals. That’s how I completed three half marathons and a handful of triathlons. That’s how I graduated from college with two degrees and jumped right into my career. That’s how I made it through a 13-month engagement without killing anyone. (Kidding. Sort of).

But today, right now, my goal is to treat my body with love and respect and appreciate all that it has allowed and will allow me to do.

I am propelled by my desire to always be my best – even when I don’t feel at my best.

and 13 months? SO glad to read about someone else who had a long engagement. We got engaged March 10th and our wedding isn’t until late May 2013.

My husband and I were engaged for 18 months. We definitely seem to be the oddballs out, but I’m really glad we took the time to realize we weren’t gearing up for a wedding, but for a marriage.

I’m propelled by wanting to live my life to the fullest each and every day. And I won’t be able to keep doing that if I don’t take care of myself today!

You’re such a flexible and cool person. How do you keep that flexibility and strong bones? I wish I could have the same. Will try some of those stunts above.
