Green Giant has a new product out called “Veggie Chips” and to celebrate this Giant Surprise, it asked me to reveal a hidden talent. And I didn’t have to think too hard about what I’d share…
This will be a surprise to 90% of you, but a “no duh” moment to the 10% or so who have:
- a) ridden with me in a car
- b) been married to me
- c) given birth to me
- d) shared a college dorm with me
- e) been near me when one of these songs has come on during a party
I am a lyrical gangsta* at not only knowing most ’80s and ’90s rap and hip hop songs, but actually reciting each and every word.
It doesn’t matter that in many cases, I have not heard the song in a few decades, those words are committed to memory and I can launch into them at a moment’s notice.
I even once hopped on stage during a spring break concert and lent my talents. Not sure the lead singer appreciated my assistance, but…
And my wedding? It was the me show. Because if my jam comes on, I’m not only singing…I’m getting a groove on.**
Some examples of songs I can get 100% right at any time:
- “Jump” from Kris Kross
- “Jump Around” from House of Pain
- “Baby Got Back” from Sir-Mix-a-Lot
- “Ice Ice Baby” by Vanilla Ice
- “We Didn’t Start the Fire” by Billy Joel
That’s the short list. The ’80s and ’90s were basically one big earworm for me of awesomely bad (Shoop, shoop-e-doop) songs and singers.
I’m not at all ashamed of this secret talent. It’s a great party trick, and now that I have discovered those channels on satellite and Internet Radio stations, I’m brought right back to the super awkward kid I was when those songs debuted.
(Shudder. That was a LOT of look. And not much of it cool.)
I bet some of you have the same talent. So let me know — leave me a comment and tell me what your go-to karaoke song is! If you’re really feeling brave, you can upload a video to Green Giant’s Facebook page. Make sure you tell me so I can go watch (there are others on Green Giant’s YouTube channel as well).
P.S. This is not a requirement of the post, so you really know I meant it. I received a couple of bags of Green Giant Veggie Chips and cracked them open while working on this post. Holy. Moly. They are delicious! Again, nobody is making me say this…I just wanted to pass on that if you see these in stores, they’re worth trying. You can use a printable coupon here Thank you to The Green Giant™ for being a sponsor. Show the Giant your surprise talent at www.facebook.com/greengiant.
*yup, on purpose
**groove is in the heart

My things growing up were Harry Belafonte, folk and musicals. But I don’t think I was ever as good as you are. And thank goodness, there is nothing on tape from me…unlike tape I have on certain others in all their young glory…
I know all the words to your list as well! Plus all the new stuff because I have two teenagers. It is embarrassing when I started singing without realizing it. Like in the grocery story, or when all her friends are in the next room.
Go to karaoke: Like a Prayer by Madonna. I have actually sung this several times at karaoke and it’s painful for everyone involved. Singing is not my forte.
okay, if we ever meet, we WILL be singing karaoke together! I have my own machine at home, love to go out to sing (especially since the bars are not smoky anymore!), and have several favorites, although I will sing pretty much anything: Joan Jett’s I love Rock & Roll, Toby Keith’s I Love This Bar, Looking Glass’ Brandy (you’re a fine girl). I could go on… the only song I recommend NOT singing? DIVO’s Whip It. we stopped half way though and sang Do Re Mi instead… the whole bar sang along.
i LOVE your childhood pic!! i think most of the songs I’m singing along to I don’t really have the correct lyrics to…but i sing anyway…loudly!
This is HILARIOUS for two reasons:
1.) 80s music is the jam. So was your style back in the day. I’m feelin’ it.
2.) I drafted the EXACT same post for tomorrow, just replace 80s and 90s songs with Disney songs. How weird. I honesty couldn’t think of a real talent of mine other than that.
Oh thank heavens I am not the only one! I remember lyrics like its my job. I love 80′s and 90′s music (I keep having flashbacks of me dancing and singing to Ace of Base in my basement when I was a kid). I am 25 and listen to all genres and eras of music. But so many people laugh at me because I ALWAYS seem to know the words to whatever song is on the radio and usually start singing to it. I get caught singing along to my music while I run all the time. I’m pretty sure I got caught doing it on the bike at the gym last week too.
I saw the siiiiiiign.
I used to get my girlfriends together to make Michael Jackson and Debbie Gibson videos. Someday, those videos will find me and haunt me.
My dad has a video of some “jam sessions” of singing and dancing friends and I. Put it this way, he keeps them in his gun safe…he knows he has crazy leverage on me with those videos! I am hoping by the time he decides to use them, there won’t be technology to play them (they’re mad old school)
HAHAH Awesome sklll to have. I’m similar. I wonder how much OTHER more useful knowledge I could store in place of all the old song lyrics.
Nevermind! Song lyrics are SO useful!
Cool about Green Giant’s chips. I had no idea! Definitely interested in checking them out. Thanks!
