This post is sponsored by Summer’s Eve®. I’ve had a lot of fun getting to know the brand and its mission to make freshness easier, and to give us the confidence to do all of the active stuff we love to do. I hope you check them out!
When I’m not in the mood to work out but I know I should, I will find any excuse to skip it.
“Oh, I have a hangnail. Guess I can’t lift!” or “I really need to catch up on back episodes of The Mindy Project, so I don’t know if I really have time for a run…”
Those are obviously ridiculous and I’m usually able to overcome those by just getting out the door and finding the motivation on the way.
But getting out the door itself can be tricky. The night before a morning run, I find that that laying my clothes, shoes, watch and other gear out so I can get into it and out the door in less than 10 minutes keeps me accountable. And when it comes to going to the gym or a group exercise class, a stocked bag means that I can grab it and go.
7 Things Your Gym Bag Absolutely Must Have
This sounds irrational, since you’re obviously wearing clothes on the way to the gym, right? I can’t tell you how many times I’ve showed up to a class — sometimes even when I was teaching — without something obvious. So, I keep spares of everything in my bag, which is also helpful because sometimes I am going to the gym on the way home from something else, and the spares become my actual outfits:
- sports bra
- tank top
- running socks
- running shoes
A Water Bottle and a Snack
And I mean a water bottled that is dedicated to your bag — not one that you carry around with you and might forget — and a snack that you can either eat for energy before or recovery after. I have a very sensitive stomach so I try not to eat right before an intense sweat session but that means I’m usually pretty hangry as soon as it’s done. And I’ve been known to eat a snack on the way to getting another snack.
If, like me, you can only make it through about 5 minutes of working out in silence, headphones are a must. CONFESSION: I have made it to the gym, gotten on a piece of equipment, realized I was headphone-free and gone home. That’s how important it is to me.
Hair Elastics and Hair Ties
I swear, I find elastics everywhere: wrapped around my faucet, around my car’s stick shift, usually 10 at a time on my wrist and stuffed into every junk drawer in my house. But when I need to tie my hair back to work out? It’s like they are nowhere to be found. So I always have a stash in the gym bag.
I’m not a super germaphobe but when I think of my sweaty hands being where other people’s sweaty hands have been at the gym — on treadmills and dumbbells — I get the creeps. So having hand sanitizer in the bag helps me feel a little less contaminated.
(Side note: if you are one of those people who doesn’t wipe down equipment after you’re done…please reconsider.)
After a workout, my mouth is both dry and stinky. It’s so bizarre, but when I feel like I have to cover my mouth with my hand while saying goodbye to people on my way out of the gym, that’s a bad sign. A swig of mouthwash helps bridge the gap until I can do a thorough brushing.
Cleansing Cloths and Cleansing Wash
When we sweat, we sweat everywhere. Tell the truth: do you ever really feel fresh or clean after a sweat fest? I truly hope the answer is no, or else you weren’t putting in enough effort.
Summer’s Eve has some great grab-and-go products that fit perfectly in a gym bag, including cleansing cloths that come individually wrapped or in resealable wipe containers. I think they are so convenient for quick relief and freshness.
The products come in a cleansing wash as well, which I love to use when I come home from a workout. I take showers at night, because in this season of my life, often the only time I an work out is after the kids go to bed. The Summer’s Eve lavender cleansing wash for sensitive skin feels and smells amazing. It’s specially formulated to be safe for the lady bits BUT works on your whole body. It makes me feel fresh and clean and super relaxed, too.
A few other facts about these products:
- Summer’s Eve conducted thorough research to develop gently fragranced products that are hypoallergenic and don’t mess with your body chemistry.
- Summer’s Eve washes are designed to rinse clean away without stripping natural moisture and without leaving a residue.
- Khloe Kardashian recently wrote on her blog, “I also think every girl should have Summer’s Eve wash in her shower” (and while that doesn’t do much for me, since I don’t have cable or keep up with any of the Kardashians, it’s always fun to see celebrities raving about the same products that I use and love)
I hope this helps you build your own gym bag so you can get out the door and get healthy!
