I’ve long described myself as a Type-A hippie. I’m the mom that meticulously researches all items on the registry, stresses out about every twinge, ache and round of nausea that pregnancy presents and won’t commit to a name until I know everything about its origin, meaning and overall history.
At the same time, I follow a plant-based diet, I have non-medicated births with a doula by my side, I encapsulate my placenta and I practice near-daily yoga and meditation.
It’s a weird mental space, frankly, because I want to try to let it all go and embrace how natural pregnancy is…but not screw it up.
One of the hardest and most anxiety-inducing parts of the 40+ weeks for me is determining what’s safe and effective for everything from food and drink to lotions and medications. I try as much as possible to be panic-free, but it’s a tremendous and humbling responsibility to know that my choices have a drastic effect on the little one I’m carrying. Even my medical providers don’t always provide the most clear instructions (they’re not used to my Type-A hippie questions).
That’s why I’m so excited to see what healthy mama® is doing. It’s the first brand to offer pregnant (and nursing!) moms a line of safe and effective products that can help treat everything from nausea to heartburn to what can only be described as the hormonal “crazies” that creep up in each trimester.
The company, which was founded by a mom who became frustrated at the lack of good products and information, makes it simple. They research the products, work with a medical advisory board and some awesome partners and then partner with retails (like Target, which is where I found my healthy mama® products) to make them easy to find — right in the Women’s Personal Care Aisle in Pharmacy.
Of course, this is crucial:
- No medication can be deemed 100% safe during pregnancy.
- Always consult your doctor prior to taking any medication while pregnant or nursing.
You can also do your own research, which I did before ever taking any of these products myself. There is a fact sheet available on healthymamabrand.com, as well as FAQs that may help alleviate any of your concerns.
I decided to try two things that were particularly important to me: Boost it Up!™, a specially formulated energy drink (packed with protein, B-vitamins, fiber and electrolytes) and the Calm the Crazy! tea, which can help ease nausea and stomach upset.
Boost it Up!™ is caffeine free, but really packs a punch. It’s designed to be served cold, but I went one step further and drank it over ice. It was really refreshing — a bit grainy, which I think probably comes from the fiber — with a nice kick from the ginger. Typically, I drink a sparkling water in the afternoon, hoping that the bubbles will give me a boost, but this is a great alternative.
The Calm the Crazy! tea is awesome as well. I brewed my first cup and drank it hot, with no added sweetener. The spearmint comes through, which really smelled and tasted delicious. The tea does also have raspberry leaf and rosehips, which I’m comfortable with in my second and third trimesters (but again, talk to your doctor and make sure you’re comfortable with the ingredients).
For my next few servings of tea, I decided to brew a larger batch and then serve it iced, with a little bit of homemade simple syrup. SO GOOD, especially on the steamy hot Florida afternoons.
(I really wanted to make this as a batch of sun tea, without the boiling water, but got a little nervous about the risk of bacteria — so teapot it was!)
As I approach my third trimester, I’m really having to remind myself to take time every day to enjoy and appreciate my pregnancy and my body. It’s so easy to get caught up in the symptoms and fatigue and sickness, but I’m incredibly blessed to be able to carry two lovely little ladies into the world. It’s my job to keep them as healthy as possible, and it starts with me as a healthy mama. I hope you’ll take a look at these new products that are helping create a new category at Target for prenatal and postnatal care — it’s one brand, making it easier than every to find products to support your healthy pregnancy!
