The family and I have had a lot of…togetherness recently. We had several rounds of severe weather come through Florida, which closed schools. We took a two-week vacation that required long drives and overnights in small hotel rooms. And then, the kids got sick which meant some extra time at home for them.
But of course, parents don’t get days off. Even when they, too, get sick. (Believe me, I’ve wistfully watched the kids watching Daniel Tiger and drinking special “get well” smoothies wishing I could join them instead of continuing to work on my to-do list.)
So I’ve had to juggle my schedule to keep everything and everyone going. That’s meant working at 6am so that I can play at 9am. Folding laundry while on conference calls so that I can make deadlines. Ordering Halloween costumes online instead of making them because…well, something had to give.
What I have refused to give up is my one hour of alone time each Sunday. It’s something I look forward to through the week. During that hour (or sometimes, I even take a bonus half hour!), I lace up my running shoes, queue up a new or newly updated playlist and RUN.
When I skip this hour, I suffer through the week, mentally and physically. (And if I didn’t know that, my husband would — when I make noises about skipping it to do chores or stay home with the kids, he all but pushes me out the door because he understands the power of self-care.)
Right now, I’m training for two events…because there’s nothing like a fully paid, publicly-announced race registration to keep you accountable. So I really can’t afford to skip my runs.
I really do try my best to avoid getting sick, but with two germy kids, it seems unavoidable. Which is why I love being a Vicks Ambassador, and spreading the word about #NoSickDays. When you take NyQuil, you get relief from cold, cough and flu symptoms, which means you get a restful sleep and can wake up to actually enjoy life’s moments in the morning. After all, NyQuil is the nighttime, sniffling, sneezing, coughing, aching, fever, best sleep with a cold medicine (come on, you know you love that tag line!).
(Quick reminder: if you’re pregnant or a nursing mom, please be cautious about which medications you take, even those you find over the counter. Consult your doctor first and/or use my favorite app to quickly see the risks of all medications: MommyMeds from the InfantRisk center.)
What else keeps me motivated? Here are a few ways I make sure I don’t miss my favorite moments.
You know all of the photos you see from runners the night before a race? With all of their gear laid out and ready to jump into as soon as the alarm goes off? It is such a game-changer. If I have to wake up, search my closet, etc., there’s a chance I’ll stall so long that I never make it out the door.
Laying out my clothes — from the shoes and socks all the way up to the GPS tracker and hat — means that by the time I start to have second thoughts, I’m already dressed and ready to run.
A Great Playlist
I love music. I am just not one of those runners who can embrace the quiet or think while my feet are pounding the pavement. So I have found a great reward for running: an exclusive playlist! This is one that I build and only listen to when I’m running, so it really is something I look forward to.
In fact, I’ve made my #SundayRunday playlist public so you can listen along with me — I add new songs to it each week! Click here to see it on Spotify.
Quality Time After the Run
My daughter Audrey loves working out with me and Remy has been in the running stroller with me on many of my runs. So they always try to chase me out the door and join me on my run. It’s really, really hard to say no but the truth is, I get touched out (thank you to @jencharsmith for that awesome phrase) and need time alone, where nobody is tugging on my shirt, wiping their nose on my arm or asking to be picked up.
Instead of just saying no, I find that it’s easier on my heart and for the kids minds if I give them something to look forward to upon my return. Often, that’s a promise that they can join me on my cooldown — I swing by the house to pick them up and take them for a quarter-mile run or bike ride at the end of my training run.
Or, we plan a fun family picnic at the park or a puzzle marathon for the afternoon.
