Recently, my poor kiddo had to sit for her first (but probably not last) cavity filling. Believe me, the news was devastating and my heart broke as she left for her appointment, gripping her Daddy with one hand and holding her beloved stuffed dog in the other.
Spoiler: she was fine, they gave her laughing gas, a sticker and a rubber ball and she came home excited to show me her “tooth paint” since they also applied sealant to try to prevent future cavities.
We’re vigilant about tooth care in our house and have been since Audrey was small. But genetics play a big role and as it turns out…we didn’t pass her the best gum or tooth genes. Despite our brushing and flossing routines, the dentist says that the way Audrey’s mouth is structured, she’ll always be a bit more at risk for cavities, overcrowding and gum issues.
She got it from her mama.
While I was lucky enough to escape the braces and retainers that tormented so many of my teenaged friends, I’ve had cavities and sensitive teeth for about as long as I can remember. Using an electric toothbrush has helped a bit with keeping my mouth clean but has also exacerbated that sensitivity.
You already know we’re big fans of Tom’s of Maine products, and we’ve been using two of their toothpastes:
So when they sent me their Rapid Relief Senisitive Toothpaste, I was thrilled to give it a try!
A few quick facts:
- This is the only toothpaste currently available in the US to use a technology that combines naturally derived arginine and calcium carbonate to help seal out pain
- It has no artificial sweeteners, flavors, colors or preservatives
- There’s no animal testing or animal ingredients
What’s really interesting to me is that it’s suggested to apply the toothpaste right to any sensitive teeth, using a fingertip — and then massaging for one minute. So, that’s what I did!
The fresh mint flavor was really nice and left my breath yummy (although be warned, it is STRONG and will make your tongue tingle!). At $5.99 for a 40-ounce tube, the price is right (it’s available at Walmart, Walgreens, CVS and Amazon).
Like the sealants that Audrey has on her tiny little teeth, this Tom’s of Maine Rapid Relief Sensitive Toothpaste actually seals the pathways on my teeth, to help block the pain.
Is it magic? Nah. I need to keep using it to get the same protection, and I’ll still be working with my dentist to try to prevent additional cavities and gum disease. But I’ve already noticed that it’s helping my teeth be less sensitive with hot and cold items, which have always been nuisances for me.
