Small Routines, Big Changes

As you guys know, from time to time I work with brands and sponsors who have a message that I believe in and an assignment that really sparks my creativity.

Win and win. This time, Glam and Quaker asked me to share some of the ways I reward myself and maintain a healthy, happy lifestyle in the ‘smallest’ ways.

Well, let’s see. I dance. I run (well, I used to). I play with my dogs. I make up healthy recipes. I meet friends at the gym.

But I think the smallest BIG thing (or BIGGEST small thing) I do is I commit to a lunchtime walk. Most weeks, I’m 5-for-5. And it makes a huge difference in my attitude.

I started this tradition at a previous office. We were in cubicles, surrounded by a lot of noise and drama. And after a few hours of working at my desk, I needed to get away.

So, on a whim, I brought my sneakers and headphones to work. And I kicked off what I called, in a 2009 post, “Lunchtime Zen.”

Have salad, will travel. And no, I don’t take those self portraits anymore. Like I said, it was 2009. Times were different.

At first, I went on my own, and slyly. Nobody at my office had a problem with me taking a break, but it felt…wrong. Like I was wasting valuable work time.

But the weeks went on and I found myself really looking forward to those walks. I bought audiobooks, discovered podcasts, started listening to calming music.

And I found that my 30-45 minutes of Zen made me a happier, healthier person — in the office and out.

We’ve moved offices twice since then, but I’m still walking at lunch. Sometimes my colleagues join me; sometimes I’m alone. I stretch my legs, rest my eyes, have some “me” time and then I get back to business. Refreshed. More open to ideas.

That’s the small/big way I make sure that my health remains a priority, and it’s something I hope some of you try to work into your own schedules.

    Its really great to do something healthier and happier and everything will follow.
    Small things as what you have said really changes yourself. Its up for us how to do or accept it.

    I’m eating a big bowl of quaker oats as I read this right now. :)

    Biggest way I maintain my health: committing to daily exercise, even if it is just 20 minutes. It’s not optional, it’s not “icing on the cake” if I get it in, it’s just part of my daily routine. I also 100% never miss breakfast!

    We have our morning walk with Boo as our daily “devotion”…most mornings, anyway. You are so smart to reclaim your lunch time.

    I need to do lunch walks again. I used to when we were in a building where we had a gym and I could walk on the treadmill. I would always read and plowed through so many books. Now I never read. And of course it’s so hot (and I’m really sweaty) so I’m not always loving the idea of going outside. Plus, I can leave earlier if I don’t take a break. But man, my attitude sucks. Especially right now. Which is probably why starting up walks again is sounding like a such good thing. :-)

    Health is very important and we have to make sure that we prioritize it…Health is wealth, as what they say…

    I love taking walks during the day, I usually do two shorter walks instead of one longer one, but definitely helps me clear my head and stretch my legs! It helps that my office is in a park like setting and the San Diego sunshine is almost always out :)

    Walking is really a big help to our health and it is better we include it in our daily routine..Walking has a lot of benefits and it is not that really boring…

    Big changes are really what we have in life always..But sometimes, we have to face and make them good changes for us…
